Female genital organs

Ovaries

• Each ovary is oval in shape

• Attached to broad ligament by mesovarium

• Part of broad ligament which extends between mesovarium &


lateral pelvic wall is called suspensory ligament of ovary

• Round ligament of ovary—connects between lateral margin of


uterus & ovary

• It lies in a depression on lateral pelvic wall called ovarian fossa


(bounded by external iliac vessel above & internal ilac vessel behind)

• However the position of ovaries are variable


--Some times,it goes down in the (pouch of douglas)
--In pregnancy,it goes up in the abdominal cavity

• Blood supply: Ovarian artery (branch from abdominal aorta)

• Function : 1- Formation of hormones (Estrogen & Progesterone)

Uterine tubes
• Each uterine tube is 10 cm in length

• It lies in the upper border of broad ligament

• Uterine tube is divided into 5 parts

1-Fimbria : Finger like projections which pick up the ova from ovary
2-Infundibulum : Funnel shape part of the tube
3-Ampulla : Widest part
4-Isthmus : Narrowest part
5-Intramural part : This segment lies within wall of uterus

• Blood supply : uterine artery (branch from internal iliac


artery)

• Function :

1-Site of fertilization of ovum

2-Nourishment of fertilized ovum

Uterus

• Hollow ,pear-shaped organ

• It has thick muscular wall

• Diameters :

Length(3 inch) X Width(2 inch) X Thickness(1 inch)
