Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Alcohol, Drugs & Medications

Objectives:
Students will be able to explain the impacts that alcohol, drugs and medications can have; both
positive and negative.
Students will be able to make responsible choices when faced with alcohol and drugs.
State Standards:
D-K.1.3 Identify ways that alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD) and medicines can be
helpful or harmful.

Context: This lesson is something that is very important when it comes to making sure that
students understand their surroundings and these substances that are part of it. Teaching them
this lesson will help them to be responsible and have knowledge if they ever have to interact with
them. This lesson is in the middle of the unit. We have previously discussed in K 1.1 what drugs
and medicine are and the difference between them. Also, we have discussed what they can do
and situations that they could come in contact with them. They also are able to identify and see
the difference between something that looks like a drug or substance and what is actually a drug
after going through lesson K 1.2. After this lesson students will take their knowledge of
substances and apply it to their household products and things they see every day. They will later
learn what harmful things are in those everyday products in K 1.4 The end of the unit will
conclude with students being able to identify who is a safe adult to take medications or drugs
from and who are not the best people to take them from. This whole unit is making sure that
students are safe and understand the risks, benefits, and situations that can come with drugs,
alcohol and medications.
Data: Students will be divided into three groups based on the exit activity from the previous
lesson. These groups will be about 6-7 students depending on how many students there are. The
groups will place those students at similar knowledge/understanding levels together. At the end
of the lesson, I will collect data through the exit ticket activity and also throughout the lesson a
Kahoot will be played where data will be collected.

Procedures:

Introduction (10 minutes): Students will enter the classroom and put their backpacks in their
cubbies. I will ask them to please get their iPads from the cart and their notebooks out of their
desks. I will then pull up the video on the smartboard. I will go over and review some of the
previous material from the lessons that will help them. I will play each video and ask them to
write down and remember a fact or two for them to share with the class. Then, I will break them
up into their groups and go over each station and answer any question that they have. I also will
give them a heads up that there will be a review quiz at the end.

Teacher Directed (15 minutes): In this portion of the lesson plan they will be playing a Kahoot.
It is a 12 question Kahoot in which the students will use their iPads to log on and join. The
questions will go over the dangers of drugs and alcohol and cases in which you may needs drugs
or medications. This is a way for the teacher to track the students’ progress in a way that is fun
for them. Once the Kahoot is done we will review the material and answer questions. This part of
the lesson will allow them to see why it is important to be aware of their surroundings and how
these substances can be harmful.

Collaborative (15 minutes): This portion of the lesson includes a video and has a follow up
activity that they will complete in their groups. They will first use their iPads and watch the
video on drugs and how they can be abused. Students will then use colored pencils and paper to
create a comic book, poster, or drawing that shows a scene or piece of information that they have
gained from the video. I will then place these around the classroom to show off their work and
all that they have learned. The groups are able to be as creative as they want and collaborate
together to work on this project. The video shows many different things so the ideas that each
group chooses will most likely be difficult.

Independent Digital (15 minutes): During this portion of the lesson students are given the chance
to really explore and dive into this topic. Students will use their iPads and open up the app Drug
Facts for Kids. This app offers a chance for students to view comic book strips, crossword
puzzles and many activities. During this time students will choose 3 activities to complete and
screenshot their end results which they will upload onto out Google Classroom page. I want this
to be a chance for students to understand the topic in a way that fits them. They are able to
choose activities that they find interesting.

Closure (15 minutes): This is the final part of the lesson in which the students will wrap up all
that they have learned through a google quiz on google classroom. This will only be a five-
question quiz but it is an exit activity to make sure they are understanding the topics. At the end,
all the children will put their iPads away after completing the quiz. As they do so I will collect
their final project from each group form the collaborative portion. I will then ask if anyone has
any questions and answer them.
Rationale:
Multimedia 1= “Speak Up: Take Medicine Safely” Video : This piece of multimedia I
chose because it is a great review over the previous material and gets the students in the
mindset of the lesson. It is a great short video that can be reused and a tool that can be
used to review the material at any point. This is a tool that has the ability to have subtitles
or headphones to help those that need learning differentiation.

Multimedia 2= Drug Facts for Young People App: This is an awesome app for this topic
and allows students to do the activities that best suits their leaning style. There are a
variety of activities and options. It has great interaction variation and fits the standards
very well. This app can be downloaded on the students iPads and reused many times as
well. The ability for students to get instant feedback is important.

Multimedia 3 = “Drug Abuse Education” Video: This video will be used in the
collaborative section. I chose this video because it explains the content in a way that is
easy to understand. It is also able to be played individually and is compatible on other
devices for those that need other assistance devices. The content is very good quality and
makes it rich of information that can be used in this lesson.
