According to Vavrus (2008), Culturally Relevant Teaching (CRT) is an educational

forum that enhances motivation and engagement in students with differentiated backgrounds.

Each student has a story of success and it doesn’t matter the color, race, or culture. Another

reason this is an important approach is because years ago most students were white and middle-

class. However, in today’s circumstances, private, charter, and public schools have different

mixed cultures. My role as a future educator is for my students to develop their learning in an

positive environment. In order for my students to be successful I will acknowledge a positive

learning environment, allow students to develop their own learning, and encourage respect for

others.

I will apply this to my future classroom by creating an environment where each student's

voice can be heard. Students should feel free to express their feelings, ideas, and questions. It is

only through this process that we can develop children who become critical consumers of

knowledge. I believe that learning is the key to success. Having a positive classroom

environment will help students be successful and more motivated. Kagan offers many strategies

and activities to incorporate cooperative learning into whole class activities. I will incorporate

activities for students to be engaged and motivated during class lessons. I will do this by

increasing team building, social skills through group work, and other exercises. As an example,

in “Mix-Pair Share,” the class mixes until the teacher calls pair. Then, the students find a new

partner to discuss or answer the teacher’s questions (Kagan 2009). In addition, I intend to

incorporate movement and learning throughout my classroom activities. This will set up a

learning environment, and it will motivate students to increase their learning skills. “Movement

activities should become as important as “book work.” We need to better allocate resources to

harness the hidden power of movement, activities, and sports. This attitude has become more and

more prevalent among scientists who study the brain. It’s time for educators to catch on”.

(Jensen 2005 p. 67).

I would like for my students to be able to develop their own learning by being active and

participating in activities. I would also love to see my students work individually and learn for

themselves so I can see if they actually are increasing in their learning and not falling behind. An

example of an interactive activity is the activity phonemic awareness activity with numbers.

Effective teaching for me is when a teacher teaches their children strategies and resources for

their future. It helps the student to be more engaged in their learning. Some goals for my students

will be to reach to their grade levels through all 12 years of school, go to college, and graduate.

Finally, A way a teacher teaches and their attitude toward their teaching can create a successful

learning environment for students.

My role as an educator is to give children the tools with which they can cultivate their

garden of knowledge. To accomplish this goal, I will give my best effort, strength, and love to

teach the needs of each child. Teaching is the noblest profession in the world and a lot of

teachers agree that it is the world’s most challenging job. It is one of the most important

functions performed in our society. I believe that teachers can change the world, and I hope to

one day be an inspiration to other aspiring teachers. My greatest accomplishment would be to

become an inspirational teacher who is always available to my students. Where I would be

constantly encouraging them, supporting them, and challenging them to better themselves. I

intend to provide all my students with a life-changing experience. I want to be renowned for my
4

exceptional teaching skills and for getting my students actively engaged in their learning. With

this goal in mind, I strive to follow the main principles of teaching.

As a future teacher, I aim to care deeply about my class and be fully invested in my

students’ learning. To show my investment, I will show up early for class, respond quickly to

emails phone calls, and try to give meaningful feedback on students' work. Next, I will

intentionally convey my passion and enthusiasm through my words and my body language.

Lastly, I expect to learn as much from my students as they learn from me. I intend to ask for their

input on how to improve their class experience. In everything I do, I will remind them that we

are there to make massive progress in their intellectual and professional development. The

importance of encouraging complete student engagement is to empower them. Then, I will ask

for feedback and adjust the class according to the needs of my students. Incorporating ice breaker

exercises encourages students to learn each other’s name. Having frequent class discussions

creates an environment in which students feel comfortable working with each other. This teaches

them the essential skills of collaboration while engaging them in the material. The role of my

students is to work hard to be successful in my classroom. I would like for my students to be

active and participants in the activities. Ideally, I would like for my students to be able to work

independently and in groups. My purpose is to see if my students are progressing during the year

and for them to know that if they need help, I can assist them. I am here to help each individual,

not just as a teacher, but as somebody who they can trust and have confidence in.

When students gain respect, their ability to respect others develops. I will not only teach

them about my lesson plans, but also teach them about loving one another and accepting each

other as a huge family. I will also provide them with additional opportunities to help my students
5

enhance their academic learning. There are many resources that the school may provide in order

to help a student with any economic problems and social problems. I will help the student with

any difficulties they might have like language barriers or cultural misconceptions and to face

their fears. I will also encourage parental involvement. Parental involvement is one of the most

important things when it comes to their children’s education. There are many ways parents can

be involved in their children education such as having them take part in students’ activities. I

will also think of new ways to include the parents that cannot come to the school. In order to get

parents involved in their child’s education I will provide video conferencing and the use of

educational apps. The most important thing to remember is to have a positive attitude and, to

make them feel welcome, to work with me, and help their children be successful. We have to do

it as a team. I believe it is the most important aspect of their child’s education.

As a future teacher, I would like to have the best for my students. I want to be a role

model for them. There is a quote that I hold near and dear to my heart that helps me remember

why I am going into education. William Arthur Ward once stated, “The mediocre teacher tells.

The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” I truly

believe an excellent teacher is not someone who explains or just demonstrates. An excellent

teacher is someone who inspires. The chance to inspire another human being is not just a great

opportunity, it is a challenge. A teacher can take an individual and make them believe, truly

believe, that their hopes and dreams are within their reach. Coming from the Hispanic culture, I

grew up speaking Spanish as my first language. Even though I was born and raised in the United

States, I was not fluent. Growing up, school was difficult. I had to work twice as hard to be

successful in school. Today, education is still one of my greatest challenges. However, I strive to

be successful in life because I have the opportunity to have a career as being a role model and to

inspire children. I want to be able to show my students that it is possible to be successful, even

when faced with learning in a new and unfamiliar culture.

Teaching provides me with the opportunity for continual learning and development. I will

acknowledge a positive learning environment, allow students to develop their own learning, and

encourage respect for others. Being an educator gives me the opportunity to share something that

I am passionate about. This is what I been called to do. I can only hope that each year I teach, I

will provide my students with not only a solid education, but also with the opportunity to

continue to develop a sense of pride.
