LTE Q&A

1) What is CQI?
CQI means channel quality indicator and it will influence the MCS and RB number allocated.

2) What is CQI Scheduling

eNodeB will select the MCS used for transmission based on the CQI reported by UE and then select RB
number based on MCS and the packet size to be transmitted.

3) Does LTE CQI similar with UMTS CQI?

Yes. The function and meaning of LTE CQI is similar to UMTS CQI. The difference is that the range of CQI
for LTE is from 0 to 15 which is specified in 3GPP TS 36.213.

4) What is the gain difference between no diversity, 2 receive diversity?

The gain of 2 receiver antenna diversity compared to 1 receiver antenna is about 2.8dB.

5) What does 2 * 2 MIMO mean? It is used for DL, not for UL?
The 2*2 MIMO for downlink means that eNodeB transmits data with 2 transmission antennas and UE
receives data with 2 receiver antennas.

The 1*2 for uplink means that UE transmits data with 1 antenna and eNodeB receives data with 2
receiver antenna.

6) GSM has CS and PS, LTE has PS only, how does GSM/LTE handover work? How does voice over
LTE work?
For voice interworking between GSM and LTE, there is two options: CS fall back and SRVCC(Single Radio
Voice Call Continuity).

7) Does UE is available for 3 modes, GSM/UMTS/LTE?

Yes there are UE available which supports GSM/UMTS/LTE three modes.

8) What is the difference between category 3 and category 2?

The main difference is the UE hardware implementation in terms of the maximum number of bits that
could be transmitted/ received with one TTI.

9) Why does LTE only has interference from other cells ,not inner cell, compare with UMTS?
The main reason is that WCDMA uses OVSF code for user differentiation in the same cell and multi-
path transmission of radio environment destroys orthogonality of OVSF code.

10) How to define the cell edge and cell center of ICIC?
For ICIC ,the RSRP difference between serving cell and adjacent cell is used to determine whether the UE
is cell center user (CCU)or cell edge user(CEU).

Event A3 could be used for ICIC user property decision.

Let Mn denotes the RSRP from neighbor cell and Ms means the RSRP from serving cell and the following
criteria could be used for UE property (CCU or CEU) decision.

If Mn> Ms-5 lasts longer than predetermined time period, then the UE is treated as cell edge user.

If Mn< MS-5 lasts longer than predetermined time period, then the UE is treated as cell center user.
11) Why DL/UL peak rate are different?

There are two main reasons:

1) Different modulation scheme: Currently only 16QAM is supported by UE while for downlink 64QAM
could be used.
2) Different MIMO mode: for downlink 2*2MIMO is used which means eNodeB could transmits two
data stream simultaneously while for uplink 1*2 is supported which means UE could only transmits
one data stream.
