Description

My philosophy of education is based upon the idea that children need to first be in a
mindset to learn. For a student to progress as a student, you have to capture all their attention.
Obviously as a teacher you’re not able to fix every problem a student has but by catering to their
specific needs as much as possible you can change the situation for an individual. If a student
comes in struggling with something from home, just asking how they’re doing can change their
mood for the day. By interacting with your students and checking in on their wellbeing not only
do you build trust in the classroom but you create a safe space for your students, a welcoming
classroom. In a classroom like this, students are given a greater opportunity to learn.

Project medium (multimedia)

The medium I chose for my project is a website. I think through a website you can
express so much more by including so many mediAftas in one. A website allows for text, videos,
and audio; making it like an essay, podcast, and video in one. By utilizing all these features in
one media I feel like my project will have a stronger impact.

My website will include different tabs on what motivates people to teach, and what kind
of impact a good/efficient teacher has on a classroom. Possibly a coordinated color scheme to
make it more appealing to a viewer, like a black and white starting page and more colorful and
interactive pages as it goes.

Potential Benefits of multimedia

The benefits of my multimedia are virtually endless, no pun intended. Through a website,
you can create such an infinite outreach. A podcast has its own benefits as well as a short film
or music but I feel like the most effective multimedia is by far a website. Not only is a website
easy to navigate, but it’s extremely easily accessible. By just a google search, millions of
websites pop up. Not the same can be said about a podcast or short film. It can easily educate
in a quick fashion as well, making it useful for trying to educate a group in a short span of time
since it’s not like a 10 minute thing you have to listen to or watch. Instead, you can click the tabs
and read up on things in a short span of time and be on your way within minutes of skimming a
website.

Potential challenges of multimedia

There are multiple challenges to overcome while making a website. Trying to create a
flowing visual experience is the first one I’ve encountered so far. It’s complicated to make many
different pages look cohesive and unified when trying to create something interesting and
different as well- since you don’t want to bore the audience, but you also don’t want to confuse
them with too much on a page. So far, to try and overcome this, I’ve designed the pages
together before putting actual information on them. By making the design and later laying on the
actual content it makes it look more solidified.

Another problem is enabling elements into the website. Trying to put in interactive
elements, music, and videos are more complex. For this specific challenge I’m still working on a
solution, but hopefully by the time the project is submitted I will have found a solution and my
project will include both video and audio(s).

Draft / Completed Project outline (or storyboard)

This is only a quickly drafted layout, with more to be added. The pages don’t have information
on them yet but the tabs have their labels and outline(s).

Artist statement
My expression module is a website describing my philosophy through my motive and the
impact it would create. In the next 10 years, or 20, or 30, whatever it may be- I don’t see my
philosophy really changing. My philosophy is based on creating a safe space for students, a
place where they can come to learn without having to stress about their community- while
helping them actually learn instead of losing the information taught after the exam. I don’t see
why or how my philosophy would change as time goes on, since it’s not something time specific.
As students grow and learn, they’ll be learning how to actually think for themselves and how to
problem solve. This in itself is one of the most neglected things within education, the process of
actually becoming open minded and free thinking. On the page where I briefly discuss the
impact of this method, I refer to the quote, “Education’s purpose is to replace an empty mind
with an open one.” I think this really pinpoints my philosophy, since I want students to be able to
think for themselves. On my website I also talk about how my motivation to become a teacher
was strongly influenced by my past teachers. In high school, it was always the same when it
came to English classes. I was bored and it felt like the class was absolutely pointless- but I
loved literature, so in my own time I would read more challenging novels or just books out of the
curriculum. Since secondary education with a focus on English is my major, I feel very strongly
especially when it comes to English, so I want to create a classroom where literature can be
engaging and fun. Unlike my own experience(s), I hope to create the classroom I wish I had and
to embody a teacher with all the ideals of my philosophy.
