THE DARKSIDE OF SMARTPHONE ON PSYCOLOGICAL TRAITS AND


COMPULSIVE BEHAVIOUR

AND COMPULSIVE BEHAVIOUR

SPEECH GOAL:

I would like to convince my audience that excessive usage of smartphone can be harmful
to people if they constantly use it and even worst it can lead to mobile phone addiction for
smartphone user.

ORGANISATIONAL PATTERN:

My speech is to target the people who likes to frequently post their picture in social media,
gamers that always playing online game for 24 hours and students who always stay up late
because of using smartphone without realizing that they need to have 6 hours good night
sleep.

INTRODUCTION:

a) Attention Gather: Is smartphone is a device full of benefit? Or did excessive usage of


smartphone can lead to permanent damage to people’s bodies? The answer is its can be
harmful or not according to our daily basis in how we manage our habits in using this
technologies . That’s why today I want to persuade you all to monitor our usage of
smartphone only the necessary amount of time in your daily life so you can live your life a
better and healthy future.

b) Reveal Topic: To begin with, my speech here today is about “The Darkside Of
Smartphone On Psychological And Compulsive Behaviour”.

c) Relevence Statement: This type of information is very important to all of the people
because nowdays smartphone have become necessities in people live.Recent market survey
revealed an average of smartphone peneteration rate of 44.6% in 47 countries and this
number expected to grow in the future. Smartphone are no longer cutting-edge
communication gadgets but are now a part of our daily basic needs. Therefore its
appropriate for us as its user to start taking seriously on how much time that we spent on
this device
d) Preview of main points: So, there are 3 main points based on this topic about
psychological trait such as influence locus of control,social interaction of anxiety and
materealism that may result toward excessive usage of smartphone.

BODY:

1. MAIN POINT 1

Influence locus of control are recognized as important personality traits to explain


compulsive behaviour towards smartphone usage.

a) Definition Influence Locus Of Control

-Locus of control refers to an individual’s perceptions about the cause of events in their
life.It also defined which an individual believes that they had the ability to affect their life
through their actions.

a. This personality traits can be divided to two type of category which is external
and internal personality traits .

b. Person with internal locus of control trait is people who believe that the cause of
an event or behavior depends on personal decisions and efforts can decide what will
happen in ones life.

c. However, external locus of control is people believe that events are not within
their control but in the hands of fate, luck and other people.

b) Different ways to coping their own problem and stress .

- It has been shown that this two type of influence locus of control trait have their own ways
in managing their own life’s problem and stress.

a. Internals engage in problem by focused to coping and reduce stress by making


and following plans.

b. Meanwhile, researchers suggest that individuals with externals locus of control


increase the likelihood to exhibit compulsive behaviors such as drug and alcohol
addiction, internet addiction and much more negative behaviour.
c. Therefore, previous study by Chak and Leung (2004) have been explored that
person with an internal locus of control is associated with less addictive internet
behaviour.

2. MAIN POINT 2

Social interaction anxiety are related to the motivations of smartphone usage and pleasure
from using it which increase reliance on smartphone.

a) Social interaction anxiety is the main personality trait that cause in misbehavior of
smartphone usage.

- Studies have found social interaction anxiety has been discussed as a driving force behind
phone use and it has recently received a lot of media coverage, particularly for young adults.

a. Social interaction anxiety is an excessive fear of social situations or interactions


with others.

b. Therefore, these type of traits often effects them to become more pronounced,
leading to anxiety and nervousness particularly when encountering strangers in
public.

b) Influence of social interaction anxiety in excessive usage of smartphone

- One study had learn that some of people with high level social interaction anxiety
demonstrate more compulsive usage of smartphones rather than low level social interaction
anxiety.

a. Individual with this particular trait often to neglect social activity with others
because they can’t coping to overcame their fearness to make mistake infront others.

b. Futhermore, researchers have shown that lonely and anxious individuals


positively benefit from on-line interaction because social anxiety is lower when
interacting online than when interacting in real life.

3. MAIN POINT 3

Finally, we had reached to the last main points aboutour topic. Influence of materialism is
also the causes for some smartphone user become addicted to their device .

a) Definition influence of materialism.


- Materialism is a person’s beliefs about the importance of material possessions in their life.

a. Individuals with this traits consider material possessions to be central of their life
and identity.

b. Futhermore, materealism person usually desire a higher level of income, strict to


their financial and are less satisfied with their live .

b) Materialism and compulsive smartphone usage.

-Individuals with this traits consider the latest smartphone model to be a symbol of material
possession and attach more to their device.

a.Futhermore, materialistic person care less about interpersonal relationship and


prefer to spend more time themselves.

b. So some researcher predict that higher level of materialism demonstrate more


compulsive useage of smartphone.

CONCLUSION:

Summary Statement:

In a nutshell, smartphone has become a part of our daily lives and it may be impossible to
totally stay away from it most especially because there are so many features and apps that
can make our life more easy and productive. People also use smartphone for entertainment
or to relieve stress. Along with its obvious benefits, however, the smartphone has other
effects that are not all that good to our life.

Closing Remark:

Therefore, I urge you to be more aware with the usage of our smartphone. Its more
convenient for all of us to only partake only some of our time in using it as it can lead us to
gain some of the negative traits in ourselves. It’s been pleasure being with all of you today,
