Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Introduction

Cell phone is also known as mobile phone, wireless phone or cellular

phone which is a little portable radio telephone. This is a combination of two

technologies, which are; first telephone invented by Alexander Graham Bell in

1876 and secondly radio which was Nikola Tesla. In this way, a mobile phone is

significantly different from traditional land line phone. Ever since they were first

introduced by Motorola in 1973.

Cell phone is a good technology which is not lacking from the lives of

many individuals both old and young. Today, it has become popular to everybody

which often makes an individual own not just one but two or more devices at the

same time. Indeed, if we go back twenty years or so, it is used to be very difficult

to reach somebody by means of the traditional phone when you needed to.

The foremost advantages of having a cell phone is that you can

communicate to your family, friends, co-workers, special someone and other

acquaintances no matter how far you are from each other. For instance, you can

contact easily to your friends by calling or sending messages via text messages,

Viber, messenger and etc. It has also been significantly helpful for both parents

and children to keep in touch and quickly communicate with each other in times

of emergency purposes but other than that, the smart phone can be use in

monitoring of what happens nationwide or even worldwide and they also can use

it to buy and sell products easily.

A cell phone is also very helpful to students since this generation is in 21 st

century, they use it as an alternative learning tool. Studying became more

effective such as look up into dictionary which it is made easy by applications. It

can also be a source of reference on internet for research studies. Almost

everything can be provided by internet for the students and that is via cell phone.

There are also applications which are applicable for tutorials when in difficulty in

a certain subject.

The disadvantages of having a mobile phone by a student are the

following; Before these phones and technology, students spend plenty of time

with their family. Now students spent their free time with mobile phones. Either

playing games or chatting with friends via mobile phones. They don’t have any

idea about how much family is important in their life. A family chain is very

important and try to make them understand that.

Putting cell phones and test times together can result in student

dishonesty. Some students may take photos of their notes or textbooks in order

to reference them during testing. Everything under the sun can both be

beneficent and disadvantageous to human beings. A cell phone can be very

helpful yet at the same time can cause bad effects physically or socially. Proper

management of usage is advised to users to avoid the bad effects it may cause.
Conceptual Framework

The diagram shown below discusses the flow of the research through the

input, process and output. Input consists the demographic profile of the

respondents including the name which will be optional, age, and gender. Process

is the series of actions that may lead to a particular result. In this study there will

be at least two; distribution of survey questionnaires to the chosen respondents

and tallying of the results. Output will be the interpretation of the tallied results

from the survey questionnaire. It will further discuss about the disadvantages and

advantages of using cell phone by Grade 11 students of Pilgrim Christian College

in school year 2019 – 2020.

Theoretical Framework

According to Escape Theory (Faber R. J., O’Guinn T. C) has been used to

explain the effects of mobile phone usage. Mobile phone helps the affected

individual escape negative events or feelings. Mobile phones may be used to

avoid larger, more pressing problems. A constant focus on the “here and now”

helps the cell phone user avoid reflecting on issues that are disconcerting.

An interesting finding is that other students are distracted when students

text in class (Tindell and Bohlander, 2012). So while a student may claim he’s

only hurting himself when texting, studies show that others are affected also. The

Theory of mobile learning (Sharples, Taylor, & Vavoula, 2005) is essential when

thinking of the role of mobility and communication in learning environments. This

theory states the possible advantage and disadvantage of using mobile phones.

According to Rich Ling, the mobile phone has fundamentally affected our

society, accessibility, safety, security, and coordination of social and business

activities. It has become part of the culture of every region in the world. The uses

of mobile phones are numerous and this includes keeping contact with friends,

members of the family, conducting business and others. Mobile phones are

important in school and also in work; it is the way of interacting, creating, sharing

and exchanging information and ideas to each other (Blumstock & Eagle, 2010).
Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to know the effects of cell phone usage to academic

performance of grade 11 students of Pilgrim Christian College S.Y 2019 – 2020.

Specifically, this study attempted to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 Age;

1.2 Gender;

1.3 Section;

2. How long do the respondents spend time using cell phones in terms of;

2.1 Social Networks

2.2 Mobile Games

2.3 Texting/Calling

3. How does cell phone usage affect the academic performances of

student?

4. Is there a significant effect in using cell phone and student’s academic

performance?
Hypothesis

This study aimed to determine the effects of cell phone usage to the

academic performances of grade 11 students of Pilgrim Christian College S.Y

2019 – 2020. A student who focuses on cell phones might have problems to

his/her grade. There is a big impact on the student who focuses, surfing and

playing on his/her cell phone than a student who limits his/her use of cell phone.

There is a big possibility that the grade of the student is affected or there might

be a problem on his/her academic performances.

Significance of the Study

This study aims to show the readers the benefits that they will get from the

findings that the researchers will acquire through the course of this study.

To students. This study may be helpful to students which may serve as

their reference on the proper usage of cell phone inside and outside the class.

To Parents. This study will guide them how may their children’s grades in

school be affected by cellphones. And how it may affect their children’s health

and social life.

To Teachers. This study may help the teachers to minimize the use of cell

phone of the students inside of the class.

CHAPTER 2

Review of Related Literature and Studies

A. Review of Related Literature

This chapter contains the gathered researches from different sources.

These different studies will be used as a guide and support to the research. The

related literature starts with the good and important effects of different gadgets

used in learning areas and goes on with the possible effects that might happen

to Students when technology is being used extensively. On the later part of the

chapter are the gathered related studies and articles done by various

researchers.

Jessica White (2005) said that, technology has completely changed the

scope of education in America. Most states require a technology aspect to their

school improvements plans. They have embraced the idea that using

technology in their classroom makes the subject anything from math to art-more

accessible to many kinds of students. Educators, administrators, parents, and

students are so well-versed in technology that it has become norm in even the

most economically disadvantaged schools. She also stated that controversy

exist about some students having access too much information. Some internet

sites are not monitored by educational sources. Students who have not been

taught the proper way to research on the internet might make a research

hypothesis based on a website whose information is untrustworthy.
