Lesson Idea Name: Intro to Logarithms

Content Area: Algebra II
Grade Level(s): 11th Grade
Content Standard Addressed:
MGSE9-12.F.BF.5 − Understand the inverse relationship between exponents and logarithms and use this
relationship to solve problems involving logarithms and exponents.

Technology Standard Addressed:

6c Students communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively by creating or using a variety of digital objects
such as visualizations, models or simulations.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

While I do want all students to create a video, they can make the instructional video any way they want. They
can film themselves having a discussion, they can create a video PowerPoint, they can voice over examples
they create and solve. Etc.

Lesson idea implementation:

Students will be introduced to logarithms in this lesson. The goal is for them to complete a 3-5 minute video
lesson about what they have learned about exponentials, how they connect to logarithms, and a few
examples of how to convert an exponential to a logarithm. The students can video themselves doing a lesson,
or they can combined elements like audio recordings, pictures, digital examples, etc. to create their video.

The students will have two class periods to complete the assignment: this way, they can record their
audio/video in a quieter place if they need to. I will give students the option to work in the hall if they need
to. I will be circulating the room, watching what students are doing and helping them s needed. On the third
day, students will present their videos to the class.

Importance of technology:
Students will need a computer and possibly a camera or video recording device for this lesson. This lesson is
meant to teach students how to create video lessons for their peers while they build a better understanding
of logarithms. The only possible way students could do this without technology is if they did an oral
presentation in front of the class, but it would lack the creativity they could express in making a video.

Inspiration (optional):
I did an activity like this when I was in middle school, but we did it in our history class rather than math.
Furthermore, I adapted the lesson idea for a math standard.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

I do not want students to post their videos online, they are only meant to be presented for the class. If they
have pictures in their video they found on the internet, they are required to cite their sources and list them at
the end of their video.

Reflective Practice:
Since this is an introductory lesson, I could assign for students to have a “sequel” to their videos at the end of
the unit. The next video could be about the logarithm and exponential rules, or how can they condense and
expand logarithmic equations.
