Is the bracing method more efficient in treating spinal thoracolumbar fractures as compared to

other conservative procedures?

Abstract

Fractures of the thoracolumbar spine are observed to be the most common fractures all across the world.
It has been reported that these fractures result in causing deformity, disability, and neurological deficit
in the individuals. Regardless of the increasing incidences of these fractures, there is a wide range of
controversies related to the best possible and effective treatment and management procedures.
Furthermore, effective treatment of thoracolumbar spine fractures, various treatment strategies have been
extensively used in the clinical practices including internal and external fixation and pedicle screws.
However, one of the recently developed technique in this field is the bracing method. Bracing therapy is
considered one of the effective treatment strategies for stabilising the fracture site through
immobilisation. Such immobilisation contributes in reducing the load on vertebrae which can further
worsen fracture condition.
Objective: The systematic review aims to analyse and evaluate the effectiveness of bracing method as
compared to other conservative strategies for efficient fracture treatment.
Method: To achieve this research aim, secondary sources including articles and journals are being
utilised related to the treatment methods for thoracolumbar spine fractures. These articles are searched
with the help of databases such as “PubMed”, “MEDLINE”, and “CINAHL”. The selected articles were
considered based on the included information relating to thoracolumbar spinal treatment through pedicle
screws, external fixation, or brace therapy.
Results: The findings suggest that bracing method can be utilised as an effective fracture treatment in
the clinical settings. Furthermore, the included information interpreted that bracing strategy is more
efficient in healing spinal fractures than other pedicle screws or external fixation methods for vertebral
stabilisation.
Conclusion: It can be concluded from the obtained information that the implementation of the bracing
strategy for vertebral treatment can generate a better outcome than other conservative methods in fracture
treatment.
