BLOOD connective tissue

//FAHRULIA RAHMANIA. FADLINA NOVA. ANDINI FATIMA ACHSON//

Blood is classified as a
connective tissue and
consists of two main
components:

COMPOSITION
COMPOSITION • Plasma, which is a
extracellular fluid
clear

OF BLOOD
• Formed elements, which

OF BLOOD are made up of the

cells and platelets
blood

All formed elements are

cells except for the
platelets, which are tiny
fragments of bone marrow
cells.

Formed elements are:

• Erythrocytes, also known
as red blood cells (RBCs)
• Leukocytes, also known as
white blood cells (WBCs)
• Platelets

transport oxygen from lungs to respiring tissues.

• Contains haemoglobin - a red protein that combines with

oxygen
• No nucleus so they can contain more haemoglobin
• Small and flexible so that they can fit through narrow blood
vessels
• Biconcave shape (flattened disc shape) to maximize their
surface area for oxygen absorption

is key part of the immune system.
The immune system helps the body
defend itself against infection.

• Found only in the blood

of human and other
mammals.
• The nucleus is absent in
it.
• Its formation takes place
in the Bone marrow
• Helps in blood clotting
PLATELETS
PLATELETS
tiny blood cell fragments that help in
clotting your blood

• Involved in the clotting process

• Seal wounds and prevent blood loss
• Help repair damaged vessels
• 150,000 – 400,000 per microliter
of blood
• Platelets stain bluish with reddish
or purple granules
PLASMA
Blood is composed of cells
floating in a pale yellow
liquid called PLASMA.

• Blo o d plasma is mostly

water, with a variety of
substances dissolved in it.
T h e s e s o lute s i n c lu d e
nutrients such as glucose
and waste products such as
u r e a t h at a r e b e i n g
transported from one place
to another in the body.
• The function is to transport
carbon dioxide, digeste d
food, urea, hormones and
heat

Origin
Haematopoiesis describes
the process by which the
cellular components of
the blood are formed.

In adults, the
predominant site of
haematopoiesis is the
bone marrow. Here we
find the multi-potent
hematopoietic stem cells
(HSCs).
