Leaders set the tone for the environment they are in charge of. When someone is in an elevate
position, people naturally look to them for direction on how to act and how to conduct business. People
are going to feel more comfortable following someone who exudes confidence. No one wants to take
orders from someone who doesn’t seem to know what they are doing.
People in manager positions should lead by example. Humility is key to being a servant for the
people you are in charge of. Whatever you do, they will do ten times more whether it is a good or bad
habit. You are always being watch so it is important to be intentional with everything you say and do.
Leaders need to have a vision of where they want to lead their people to. This requires creativity,
strategic planning and initiative. They are the ones in charge of setting goals and planning the steps of
how to achieve those goals. Obviously, they cannot do everything themselves. Leaders must know how
to appropriately delegate the work to people who will get their part done. Clarity is essential when

When I was leading a small staff one of the big things, I quickly noticed was how important it is to
have a staff that is well trained. When the staff is not confident in what they are supposed to be doing it
eats into productivity and quickly becomes the leader’s problem to answer the many questions that arise.

I currently lead a small group and see how important it is for each member to feel important and
included. People are more likely to want to do more when they feel like a necessity and appreciated.
Respect has to be a two-way street. This can be shown be having compassion, engagement and
celebration for those you’re over. People will want to go the extra mile for someone they know cares
about them. They will also want to stick around longer which will cut down on employment overturn.

Leaders that know their staff well will have the advantage of knowing their strengths and
weaknesses. They will know what to assign to who to maximize productivity and know how they can
challenge and grow certain individuals. Taking initiative to improve your leadership traits will not only
benefit you and the people you are over, but the company as a whole as well.
