Problem Set 4
PROBLEM 1
A beam, with cross-sectional dimensions on the right, is loaded as
shown below. Determine the following:
a. maximum flexural stress of the whole beam;
b. maximum shearing stress of the whole beam;
c. maximum flexural stress 2 m to left of the roller support;
d. maximum shearing stress 2 m to left of the roller support;
e. flexural stress 2 m to left of the roller support and 20 mm from the
top;
f. shearing stress 2 m to left of the roller support and 20 mm from the
top; and,
g. total compressive force 2 m to the left of the roller support.

Answers:
a. σmax = 216.220 MPa e. σ = 39.271 MPa, C
b. τmax = 15.583 MPa f. τ = 4.826 MPa
c. σmax = 43.891 MPa g. F = 108.226 kN, C
d. τmax = 6.978 MPa
PROBLEM 2
The 2300-lb boat’s mass center is at G. If the boat rests on the trailer at the smooth contact A and can be
considered pinned at B, determine the maximum bending stress and maximum longitudinal shear developed
in the main strut of the trailer. Consider the strut to be a box-beam having the dimensions shown and pinned
at C.

Answers:
a. σmax = 21.116 ksi
b. τmax = 2.181 ksi

PROBLEM 3
Determine the shear stress at points A and B on the beam if it is
subjected to a shear force of 600 kN.

Answers:
a. τA = 11.379 MPa
b. τB = 24.828 MPa

Follow-up Question:
Why is the shear stress at B greater than that at A?
PROBLEM 4
The beam supports the loads shown. Determine the maximum value of P if the allowable flexural stress is
40 ksi in tension and 60 ksi in compression, and the allowable shear stress is 25 ksi.

PROBLEM 5
The beam is subjected to the loading shown. Determine its required
cross-sectional dimension b if the allowable shear stress is 75 MPa and the b/2
allowable bending stresses are 50 MPa in compression and 120 MPa in
tension.
