Week 1 This week was spent on idea generation

We have been asked to produce either an
investigative TV programme, an Investigative radio
production or an investigative online article. It must
appeal to the target age group of 16-22. We can
base it on whatever we want so long as it is hard
hitting and investigative.
We have decided to make a TV production and a
radio production. We wanted to use a topic that
would interest our target audience so for the TV
programme, we chose sport. We intend to look at the
evolution of modern technology in sport. Our radio
production will be on whether video games are the
main cause of violence. This will relate to our
audience because the majority of people who buy
video games are in this age bracket. We haven’t
done much work on radio productions, so we wanted
to improve our skills on this topic. This is so we can
seriously consider making our final major project a
radio production. However, we will more than likely
do a TV programme, so we wanted to enhance our
skills even further.
Our focus groups were very helpful. We found out that
100% of people liked our idea. We also received
valuable feedback on what we should include to
interest people. We also asked people their interests
so that we knew what views to present in our two
productions. I think this will help us remain impartial
and un-biased.

This week was spent researching target audiences
We found out lots of things about our target
audience. We found out that:
 They use smartphones more than any other
device
 Facebook is still the most popular social media
site amongst this age group
 They use social media as their main form of
communication
 They prefer a cool product rather than a cool
experience
 They use a lot of ad-blocking software
 They have a very short attention span
This will help us because we now know how to
advertise to reach our audience. We know that it
needs to be new and original to engage the viewer.
We need to use social media to show short clips to
get people interested and watch the whole
production. We also need to make it really engaging
to appeal to the aspect of liking a cool experience.
Very useful. It helped us to understand what views our
audience has on documentaries and radio
productions. How we can reach as many people as
possible and keep them interested. Content-wise we
also found out many different things about what
views they would like to see presented and also how
to best display those views.
When it comes to FMP, I think that we should send out
surveys earlier than the date when we need them. We
also need to advertise on all different social media
sites, even our personal ones. This will reach more
people, and we can then ask people to share so that
we reach even more people.
We need to give our audience a cool experience. In
order to achieve this we have to make our piece new
and interesting. We also have to do this from start to
finish. This generation has the average attention span
of seven seconds. Therefore we need to make sure
that every second of our piece contains quality
content that engages everyone. This is more difficult
that the target audience we normally choose. When
we focus on adults, for example, They tend to have a
larger attention span and also enjoy watching long
interviews and can focus for a lengthy period of time.

This week was spent researching codes and
conventions
We have been asked to make our productions hard-
hitting and investigative.
I have learned that sometimes, it can be more
engaging when you don’t tell a story in chronological
order. If you start with the climax, it can engage the
audience instantly, they are then more likely to watch
what happened before to cause what they saw at
the start. We can then finish by talking about what will
happen in the future and pose questions that will
keep them interested from start to finish.
This will definitely influence the way that we format
our productions. We will try to include all what we
have learned in our target audience research, and
now what we have learned when looking at specific
codes and conventions. We need to include,
interviews, a mix of archive footage and b-roll and
most importantly, it all needs to be relevant and
interesting.

This week was spent researching codes and
conventions
I completed a focus group in which I found that the
majority of my target audience would find both our
ideas interesting and engaging if we provide a variety
of different opinions and viewpoints.
I need to ensure that I use most of the codes and
conventions but use them in a way that engages my
target audience. This may be difficult, but I intend to
use. I will use most of these codes and conventions to
provide clarity and engagement to the viewer. I want
to make sure that everything I use is relevant and
provides new information.
By putting all of my findings into a clear and concise
graphic, it really helped me to plot out and
understand what I best need to do in order to create
something that still qualifies as a professional

This week was spent planning your productions
I learned that for consistency it would be best to do all
of my pieces to camera In the studio. I also thought
that to prevent the viewer from getting bored I would
split them up with interviews and voice overs. I want to
use lots of music, graphics but also relevant
information to keep the audience engaged and
informed.
This will give me a much clearer idea of what I need
to include in my production when it comes to filming
and finding my archive footage. Also when I am
completing all of my pre-production work, I will be
able to get a much a clearer idea of what I need to
include in my production and how best to achieve
what I want.

They are. I filmed in front of a green screen in the
studio for all of my clips. This means that I have good
consistent lighting and sound. I can also put a studio
background behind to make it look like a professional
production. Since I first started planning this
production I wanted to base it in a studio and the
script, interviews and questions have all been based
around presenting it in a studio.
I am on track for all of my work in correlation with the
production schedule.

Overall I found it successful with no problems.

Yes, I have used all of the techniques that I wanted to
and they all turned out well and I think they will be
effective.
This week was spent editing
I am finding the editing process relatively straight
forward. I think that because I found and
downloaded all of the archive footage prior to
editing I have been able to do it quickly. I found it
easier to edit lots of individual segments and then
piece them together in order afterwards. This meant
that I could focus on each bit at a time and if I
wanted to add anything extra then I could do it
easier.
I didn’t encounter any problems.
I haven’t used any techniques in this edit, however I
have used some of the older techniques to a better
standard. For example, cutting to the beat, green
screen editing and moving images. I felt that I have
used all of these well and I didn’t want to use any wild
techniques that would maybe draw away the
attention from the content to the effects.

This week was spent editing
I found the editing process for the podcast relatively
simple. Due to the fact that the whole interview and
presenter lead piece was flawless with no mistakes it
was easy to put it on the timeline behind each other
and then add a jingle.
I didn’t encounter any problems
I am happy with both productions. I feel that they
suited the brief, related to the target audience and
included all the relevant codes and conventions that
allow them to constitute as both a podcast and a
television documentary.
I ensured that I used relevant language, engaging
graphics and told new and interesting information. I
tried to keep the focus on one element to a minimum
to ensure that the viewers’ attention span would not
lose track due to the content.
I think that in my documentary I could’ve focused on
other sports a bit more rather than around 85% being
football based. I feel that this would reach a larger
target audience. In the radio show I would’ve liked to
include some adverts that would be relevant to our
target audience. This may help keep them engaged
but it would also suit the codes and conventions
slightly better.
In the documentary, I think I did it very well. When
researching all of the different ones that I wanted to
use, I found that in the editing process, I matched the
research and used them all well. I tried to not overuse
any one element as I felt this would become boring
and I wanted to keep the variety in the production.
The same goes for the radio show. However, the one
element I wish I did include was adverts.
I think that both my productions could match that of
a professional one. I tried to take inspiration from
professional productions and I think this helped me to
produce one of a similar standard and quality.
I don’t think it falls short anywhere. TO improve I would
add adverts to the podcast and add more content
about other sports to the documentary
Personally, I need to improve my camera work and
framing. I think the actual presenting is strong and I
am happy with my editing. I also think that my
research and pre-production work could be improved
as I feel that you can never do too much research.

This week you pitched
Using a PowerPoint presentation with a lot of images
and short bullet points.
I feel that we didn’t rely too much on the PowerPoint
and we did a lot of elaborating ourselves. We didn’t
read off of the screen and we presented all of our
ideas well. We were knowledgeable about our
research, filming and editing and we tried to present
all of our work in a way that was engaging.
I was happy with the pitch, I felt we covered
everything and we presented well.
