Application Guide for calibration of a CMA 56, CMA 156 and CMS 156

1 Introduction
This is only a guide. It can be used for calibration of an OMICRON amplifier. If it is required to calibrate the
unit under specific conditions in order to measure the accuracy for specific output levels, then we recommend
that you follow this guide. All measurements must be performed in the specified operational range
(73°F ± 10°F / 23°C ± 5°C).

Factory calibration of all OMICRON-units is traceable to national standards (DKD, ÖKD). To ensure an
unbroken chain of traceability, all necessary measuring instruments are calibrated and compared to national
standards at the DKD (Deutscher Kalibrierdienst) or ÖKD (Österreichischer Kalibrierdienst) laboratories at
regular intervals.

The accuracy of an OMICRON amplifier is defined in the chapter on the Technical Data of the hardware
manual. All values are guaranteed for 1 year from date of factory calibration. It is possible to check and
recalibrate the amplifier at OMICRON electronics. Also the user has the option to check the function and
accuracy himself. The tables in the appendix will assist the examination. If results of the measurements show
that the OMICRON amplifier is out of the specified tolerance, the unit must be sent to OMICRON electronics
for adjusting and recalibration. It is not possible for the user to perform adjustments of an OMICRON amplifier.
When sending a unit to OMICRON for calibration, please attach a copy of the calibration results and send as
much background information as possible.

The accuracy and traceability to national standards also determines the quality of test-equipment. The
customer therefore must take the accuracy of his measuring instruments, his own reference standards and
those of the OMICRON amplifier into account. The accuracy of the measuring equipment is referred to as a
standard. A standard is characterized by its worst-case tolerances. By adding the tolerance-limits of the
reference standard, the OMICRON amplifier, and all the measuring equipment at the time of measuring, the
allowable tolerance-range can be determined.

The phase calibration will not be elaborated on. The principle of measurement for the common phase
measurement devices (i.e. measurement of the zero crossings) is not suitable to measure the phase angle of
the OMICRON amplifier (due to high phase resolution as well as widely differing signals; e.g. 250V and 25A).
Based on the concept and the digital signal generation of the CMC, it can be assumed that the phase
accuracy will also be within the guaranteed specified values if all the other calibration checks prove to be in
order.

2 Requirements for Calibration Equipment

The measuring instruments generally need to be of a very high accuracy. Devices with an accuracy of at
least four times better than guaranteed values of the OMICRON amplifier should be used.

Signal Accuracy of measuring Minimum required

device used for factory accuracy for test
calibration.
VDC < 10 ppm < 250 ppm
VAC < 200 ppm < 250 ppm
Shunt IDC < 60 ppm < 100 ppm
Shunt IAC < 150 ppm < 150 ppm

If the current is measured over the voltage drop of a shunt, please note that a high quality AC-shunt must be
used.

For signal quality measurement (THD = total harmonic distortion) the bandwidth of the THD-analyzer must
have a bandwidth of 80 kHz.

3 Calibration Check Procedure

3.1 Fundamentals
Check all output signals for amplitude and signal purity.

3.2 Used Abbreviations

• NV: nominal value of the OMICRON amplifier.
• SP: Amplifier tolerance range expressed in ppm
• SA: Sum of inaccuracies from Amplifier terminal over measuring equipment of user to national standard
expressed in ppm
• IT: Input Tolerance of the input stimuli of the tested amplifier in ppm
• LH: Higher limit with regard to all inaccuracies
• LL: Lower limit with regard to all inaccuracies
• RS: Shunt current determination
• TS: Tolerance-limit of shunt-value expressed in ppm

3.3 Conversion Table

[%] [ppm]
0,01 100
0,1 1000
1 10000

3.4 Preparation
Turn the OMICRON amplifier on. Warm-up time > 15 min.
Turn on the DC-Source or a CMC for stimulating the OMICRON amplifier. Warm-up time > 15 min.
Ambient temperature: 73°F ± 10°F / 23°C ± 5°C.

3.5 Relationships
Formulas:
[1] LH = NV + |NV x (SP + SA + IT) x 10-6|
[2] LL = NV - |NV x (SP + SA + IT) x 10-6|
[3] LH = NV + |NV x (SP + IT + RS + TS) x 10-6|
[4] LL = NV - |NV x (SP + IT + RS + TS) x 10-6|

3.7 Voltage Channels

Always measure one output. Set all unused outputs to 0V. All measurements must be done at maximum output
with no load connected. Calculate tolerance limits with formulas [1] and [2].
Signal-purity must be tested with a THD-Analyzer.

3.8 Current Channels

To test the current outputs a calibrated shunt of approx. 100mΩ is required. Please note that the shunt must
be designed for AC-signals (bandwidth > 150kHz). By measuring the voltage drop across the shunt (RS) the
current can be measured indirectly. For calculation of the measurement accuracy consider the shunt
tolerances (TS) (to calculate the tolerance limits use formulas [3] and [4]).
