FUTURE OF SPORTS 2

Future of Sports

Technology in sports is changing how viewers watch sports at an increasingly rate over the

past few years with new types of ways to interact to live games (Rodgers, 2019; Bailey, 2016)

. The NBA and its teams are on the wave to use technology because it will bring “Advanced

statistics, wearable technology and more now permeate to the league” (Bailey, 2016). Sports

fans Do not have to sit around and watching matches. They are passionate about the sport they

love, having all the information at their fingertips and can become their own commentator

(Rodgers, 2019).

Forbes (2019) is bi-weekly global magazine company that also has online content. There

topics focus mainly on business, investing, technology, entrepreneurship, leadership, and

lifestyle. there targeting audience is from the college-educated to professionals. Bleacher report

(2016) is a daily global sports media website. Only focus on sports but cover and analyze a wide

range of different sports. there targeting audience is mostly for the younger generation.

Many may say a news source that focusing on sports would have a better coverage on a

scientific news story. Furthermore, when looking at a side-by-side comparison on coverage of

the way technology is affecting sports and background information on social media ,

statements given by chief technology officer, NBA commissioner , manager of basketball

strategy/technology ,and vice president of operations of technology, and the ability to remain

neutral, which source is more effective, Forbes or Bleacher report?

FUTURE OF SPORTS 3

The news article must provide facts on the advancement of technology in sports and the

overall impact. Forbes (2019) and Bleacher report (2016) both provide background information

on how technology can revolutionize the way fans watch sports, allowing billions of people

across the globe to experience this rapid change (Rodgers, 2019; Bailey, 2016). However,

Forbes provide a more thorough understanding of how social media and how it contributes to the

change in technology such as “news outlets are constantly sharing updates about live matches via

Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook. Log onto any of these platforms during a big game,

and you’ll be sure to see thousands of posts about the latest referee decision, an injury, or

substitution. (Rodgers, 2019). The article allows the reader to better understand that there are so

many different ways to keep up or watch a sport. The author also includes 5G, it enables high-

quality, real-time virtual, augmented and mixed reality content to become increasingly available

on portable devices (Rodgers, 2019). This information is essential in understanding what allows

you to upload to social media the same sports content as other fan at the same time in a split

second or even using Virtual reality. On the other hand, Bleacher Report discuss the use of VR

and what it brings , at the end of the 2018 season the NBA introduced its VR/MR League Pass ,

it allow basketball fans from all over the globe to use a cross-platform app to tune in and watch

the hottest games from all different angles and also wearable tech that is used to measure a

number of different things (Bailey, 2016). This information allows the readers to see the

advancement that is being made.

FUTURE OF SPORTS 4

Furthermore, when comparing both articles, credibility is important to support how

technology is merging with sports. In the Bleacher report article Zach Guthrie, the manager of

basketball strategy/technology, uses mobile device such as tablets to walk players through an

upcoming defensive and offensive possession. “The whiteboard and dry-erase marker had a good

run, but tablets and other mobile devices offer infinitely more possibilities” (Bailey, 2016).

Bleacher report also obtained statements from Adam silver, The commissioner of the NBA.

"Twitter's new timeline is a terrific complement to our live game experience, “Adam realize how

social media allowing the fans to be more interacted by gathering all the memorable moments

and real time conversations. By having the commissioner of the NBA and manager of basketball

strategy/technology, the source establishes credibility (Bailey, 2016). In contrast, Forbes

provides few sources to support the article, One from Sacramento Kings chief technology officer

Ryan Montoya (Rodgers, 2019). According to the article, Ryan and the Sacramento Kings team

up with Verizon and offer students virtual courtside seats powered by 5G. Ryan stated “This is

an extension of our commitment to using technology to enhance the way fans engage with the

team—whether live streaming a game in virtual reality, downloading real-time statistics via our

award-winning dual-mode app, or watching 4K replays on our ultra HD video board, technology

allows us to create and deliver engaging content” (Rodgers, 2019). There are addition stories

within the article that contribute to the lack of considerable credibility. Therefore, Bleacher

Report is exceptional in establishing credibility.

Moreover, both of these articles focus on the technology point of view, gives the reader a

neutral sense of tone. Bleacher report offer no bias whatsoever and same as for Forbes no bias

whatsoever.
FUTURE OF SPORTS 5

In conclusion, after reviewing both articles Rodgers and Bailey both are suited to report the

progress and impact of technology in sports. However, yet it lacks credibility and statements but

due to appeal ethos Forbes appear as better source for reporting the revolutionizing of

technology in sports for a professional who is interested in technology or sports.
