Subject Science

Grade Fourth Grade

Level

Learning 4.4 The student will investigate and understand basic plant anatomy and life
Objective processes. Key concepts include
a) the structures of typical plants and the function of each structure;
b) processes and structures involved with plant reproduction;
c) photosynthesis; and
Content

d) adaptations allow plants to satisfy life needs and respond to the

environment.

Online The class is scheduled on specific days and times, with the instructor giving live
Activity lectures with student access to chat/voice communication. The instructor will
begin by screensharing own screen using Zoom, with unique class ID provided prior
to lesson. Instructor will have already designed a PowerPoint to provide lesson
(also available to students for download), with links to activities, videos, etc.
embedded within presentation. Today’s lesson is Photosynthesis.
Instructor will begin lesson with short lecture on specifics of photosynthesis, with
focus on vocabulary such as carbon dioxide or stomata. Small discussion will be
opened up with instructor initiating questions about process, cycle, vocab, etc.
After base knowledge has been established, instructor will give students a preview
of what simulation entails and then have students hypothesize prior to starting
simulation as well as take notes and record data throughout the simulation. (Which
light will create the most growth? Which light will create the least growth?) Before
each type, instructor will pause and ask students what they hypothesize for each
step specifically. Once simulation is complete, instructor will allow discussion about
simulation which will allow students to provide their own opinions on why they
think the light color/ strength, CO2 rate, etc. affect the process of photosynthesis.
At end of lesson, students will be required to download the questions/notes
instructor provided and have answered and returned by next class, including a
drawing of the cycle of photosynthesis. Students will also be asked to begin their
first long-term project where they plant a seed of any kind, and observe and record
the growth; seed/soil types, light exposure, water rate, feed rate, height, color, etc.
After six weeks, students will write an essay on their own plant growth and how it
prospered or, if necessary, what needed to be changed based on lesson.
Lesson will be recorded and available to students to go back and review as well on
online school/class portfolio (Blackboard, Canvas, etc.).
