N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Molly Fung Date of Activity: 10/2, 10/5, 10/16

Faculty name: Dina Balderas, Nancy McGuckin, Nicole Bencs

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be
specific about the purpose and your role):

On 10/2, I attended a dinner program with Dina Balderas. The program was focused on a new
medication for emergency hypertension with the intent to prevent strokes and quickly relieve the
patient of high blood pression. The medication is called Cleviprex. There was a Powerpoint
presentation by a doctor from Florida, who’s main focus is hypertension and stroke prevention.
The dinner program was directed towards unit managers, educators and nurses who would most
likely be using this medication.

On 10/5, I attended the Stop the Bleed presentation by the Integrated Community Solutions to
Active Violence Events. I learned about how to respond to an active shooter and how to respond
to traumatic events where medical help is needed.

On 10/16, I was a part of a panel for Nursing 195 prenursing students who were interested in
learning more about the BSN program. The students asked me, and other 3rd/4th semester students
about the interview process and nursing school.

Where was this held and what was program/activity length?

The dinner program was held at Vivace where dinner was provided while the guest speaker
informed the audience about when to use the medication, how to use the medication and case
studies showing the efficacy of the medication. This program was about 2 hours in length.

The Stop the Bleed presentation took place at the College of Nursing room 117 for about 4
hours.

The Nursing 195 panel took place in room 105 of the College of Nursing. I stayed for 2 classes
which totaled 2 hours.

Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

The dinner program was my first experience with something like this. I really enjoyed learning
about this medication and hearing about the process of how new medications are incorporated
into hospitals. Some local hospitals have heard of the medication before, while some participants
have actually used it before. It’s also amazing to see how new medications are compared to older
ones which are not as effective or have a slower onset. I enjoyed the food as well.
I have participated in an Active Shooter training course before, however this course was different
in that there were hands on opportunities to practice. The teaching team made the experience
realistic and were very informative.

When I was a pre-nursing student in the Nursing 195 course, I observed the BSN panel and felt
very far away from being in nursing school. Being on the other side of the panel made me feel
very appreciative of the experience. I also tried my best to relate to the students as best as I
could, since I knew the perspective that they were coming from. When I was a freshman, the
BSN panel was very intimidating and the nursing school students made the interview process and
nursing school seem very scary and challenging. But after going through it, I think the students
would benefit more from encouragement and remaining true to themselves rather than sticking to
the status quo.

How would you continue to use this experience throughout your nursing career?

I would like to continue to go to dinner programs if they are made available because they provide
a way for nursing to learn more about the new technologies and medications that are making
their way into the hospitals. After going through preceptorship, there really isn’t a lot of time in
the day to spend hours educating nurses, which is why dinner programs or online modules are
effective.

After being Stop the Bleed certified, I apply what I learned in traumatic experiences to tourniquet
a bleeding patient or I can help others to safely respond during an active shooter event.

Lastly, I can continue to encourage and mentor younger students who have an interest in nursing
school.

Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why or
why not? (Describe)

I would recommend all of these professional experiences in the future. They have all benefitted
me in some way that can add to how to respond as a nurse, a mentor, and a student.

Brochure or proof of attendance obtained if applicable? Stop the Bleed Certificate. Signature on
validation of clinical hours form obtained? yes
