Graphing Linear Equations Objectives Students will be able to… • Demonstrate understanding of graphing linear equations. Essential Skill • C-5: Demonstrate understanding of concepts. Standards 8.F.A.1 Understand that a function is a rule that assigns to each input exactly one output. The graph of a function is the set of ordered pairs consisting of an input and the corresponding output. 8.F.A.3 Interpret the equation y = mx + b as defining a linear function, whose graph is a straight line; give examples of functions that are not linear. For example, the function A = s2 giving the area of a square as a function of its side length is not linear because its graph contains the points (1,1), (2,4) and (3,9), which are not on a straight line. Procedure • Warm Up – Which One Doesn’t Belong: Ask students to take a moment to examine all 4 numbers and to determine which one doesn’t belong. Each number is a possibility, but direct the discussion towards the fact that 3 of the numbers are perfect squares and one is not. • Introduce essential skills and objectives. • Practice Test - Finish reviewing the final 3 problems of the practice test. Review any other problems by student request. • Desmos - Instruct students to login to laptops and to go to student.desmos.com. Introduce Marbleslides activity (http://teacher.desmos.com/activitybuilder/custom/566b31734e38e1e21a10aac8). Complete slides 1-14 as a class, and then provide students with time to try on their own. • Closure - Instruct students to put laptops away when there are 5 minutes of class remaining. Display wrap-up slide which asks students to reflect on the activity. Students will be asked to write on an index card one challenge they experienced during this activity as well as one takeaway. Differentiation and Assessment • Extension: If students finish Desmos early, they may go onto Enrichment pages. • Support students with problem solving as needed during Desmos. Homework/Assessment Homework • Test Monday - Review Practice Test, Notes
Formative and Summative Assessment
• Listen to/evaluate student responses during guided instruction and discussions to check for understanding. • As students complete the activities on Desmos, evaluate their accuracy and understanding. • Review exit tickets to assess student challenges and takeaways.
