INTRODUCTION:

Abogado, Timothy Raymund R.

Technology evolves through time and the media is using it in order to provide news about politics,
lifestyle and etc. Popular social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram are also used by the
mass media in order to deliver important news around the world and locally. In the local setting, there is a
widespread issue about “fake news” and it’s circulating wrong information to the people. Mocha Uson, an
artist, blogger and a leader of the sexy dance group called “Mocha Girls” (Rappler.com) became famous
for spreading “fake news” through her Facebook Posts. The term “Fake News” according to Pascual is to
destroy or give wrong speculations about a person’s name in order to mislead the people. Mocha Uson
became famous for spreading the “news” about a girl who was killed due to the drug war in the Philippines.
It turns out that the “news” was really a girl killed and raped in Brazil. Politicians in the opposition of
Duterte’s administration namely the Liberal Party and Antonio Trillianes had some fake news from Mocha.
The effect of “fake news” is that it negatively damages the Philippine media. News that mislead the people
can turn into chaos and it can affect the country as well. In addition to that, Mocha Uson wants to
manipulate the people into spreading “fake news” in order to hide and mislead the real situation. As a whole,
“fake news” should’t be practiced because of the negative effects that can jeopardize a person or a country’s
well being.
