In a male dominant society it is typical for the man to take care of anything financial

and/or physical while the woman cooks and cleans and takes care of her man. Blake Shelton is a

typical country man with a patriarchal perspective. His song “I’ll Name the Dogs”, represents

anti-feminist beliefs through out the song, he asserts male-dominance into society while putting

the woman before men based on societal stereotypes.

Blake Shelton is admired by his many fans because he uses these typical gender role

stereo-types to insert an emotional connection between the song and fans. His song, represents

the typical male dominant relationship the woman picks the house and the man buys, he hangs

the pictures and she plants the flowers. This song sets up a picture perfect life hard working dad,

stay at home mom with kids and dogs.

He represents himself as a hard working country man with a dainty female for a wife who

stays home to care for the animals. “The moral structure of society rests on the stability of the

patriarchal family and that the stability of the patriarchal family rests on the conformity of

women to patriarchal gender roles.” (Tyson 116). This quote explains that society depends on

women to cooperate with this specific person they are supposed to be. He says at 0:36 in the

song “you find the spot and i’ll find the money , you be the pretty and i'll be the funny.” This

quote perfectly explains the typical male dominant relationship; she picks the house and he buys

it, he cracks all the jokes and talks while she is just there as arm candy.

Blake Shelton embodies the typical working country man as most of his songs are about

putting women second to men, making their only use to be attractive and caring while the men

go out and make the money to bring home food. He embodies the perfect husband in the male

dominant society. Songs should be used to empower women not put them on a lower ranking

than men.
