A MESSAGE
Dear Sir/Madam,

Since being founded in 2010, Team Guardian has been dedicated to providing students an opportunity
to gain experience in the field of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technologies, as well as expand their
knowledge beyond what can be learned in the classroom. What began as a fourth-year undergraduate
project has become a full-fledged competition team with members from a variety of faculties and all
years of study. Team Guardian strives to create leaders and professionals by allowing members to learn
and grow. Those who begin as junior members and mentees eventually become leaders and mentors
in various technical fields. As a sponsor, your support would not only further assist us in achieving our
goals of attending competitions, but also aid the growth and leadership of the team and its members.

Thank you,

Kris Gjernes

ABOUT US
Team Guardian is a multidisciplinary group of over 20 members from Simon Fraser University in all
years of study. Although our team primarily consists of students from the School of Mechatronic Sys-
tems Engineering, we have members studying Software Systems, Computing Science and Interactive
Arts and Technology.

Our team started as a group of 4 engineering students building a UAV for their fourth-year undergrad-
uate project. Since then, the team has steadily grown and reached out to different faculties to create a
diverse and dedicated team of students.

The team consists of members from different SFU faculties and schools including Applied Sciences, Beedie
School of Business and Communication and School of Interactive Arts and Technology.

COMPETITIONS
DRONE FAIR UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE
Taking place at universities across Canada, Drone Fair is an event which
brings together enthusiasts, professionals, innovators, and vendors to
encourage growth in drone technology. The University Challenge involves
problem solving, designing, and demonstrating a drone in different sets of
challenges.

Highlights
1st Place (2016)

UNMANNED SYSTEMS CANADA (USC) COMPETITION

The USC competition supports Canadians taking leadership in the research
and development of unmanned aerial systems. Each year a new scenario
challenge is set up in which university teams across Canada can compete.
The scenarios are often based on real-world events, such as using UAVs to
fight forest fires, identifying damage done from a natural disaster, or survey-
ing crop fields to determine crop health.

Highlights
2nd Place out of 14 Teams (2016)
3rd Place for Design Report (2015)
2nd Place (2012)
Honourable Mention (2011)

Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI)

STUDENT UNMANNED AERIAL SYSTEMS (SUAS)
COMPETITION
The SUAS competition is organized annually by AUSVI to challenge students
from across the world to design and integrate their UAVs and prepare for a
specific mission. The competition requires design integration and
demonstration of the system, which includes autonomous flight,
navigation and use of the onboard payload sensors.

Highlights
15th Place in Oral Presentations (2012)
11th Place for Journal Papers (2012)
18th Place overall out of 26 Teams (2012)
5

A 3-day event to engage and promote extra-curricular clubs to the 30,000 students of SFU.

DRONE FAIR
Compete against other university teams in the University Challenge.

ENGINEERING AND GEOSCIENCE FESTIVAL

A one-day trade show- style event hosted by APEGBC showcasing companies and student teams for
National Engineering and Geoscience Month.

UNMANNED SYSTEMS CANADA COMPETITION

OUR FLEET
HUGIN PA S T
The Hugin was successfully used
for the 2015 and 2016 competitions.
With a 2.2 m wingspan, the Hugin
was the largest airframe Team
Guardian had used at the time, with
nearly 9000 square centimeters in
the fuselage to store our onboard
equipment.

SWALLOW PRESEN T
With a 2.6 m wingspan, the FPV
Model Swallow is significantly larger
to carry more equipment for the
team. Currently being developed for
competition, the Swallow will carry
a DSLR camera, onboard image
processing computer, an autopilot
board, and enough batteries to
power it for a 40 minute search
flight.

LADYBUG
PRESEN T
For the first time, Team Guardian is
developing a rotary-wing system to
fly simultaneously with our fixed-
wing airframe. The hexacopter will
be used for tasks such as object
delivery and retrieval. With a flight
time of nearly 45 minutes, the
hexacopter has the endurance to
complete an entire search mission.
