Chapter 1 – Passive Sentences in Simple Present Tense

Objectives

1. Students are able to identify the pattern of passive sentence (positive, negative, and
interrogative) in simple present tense
2. Students are able to identify the use of to-be, and past participle verbs in passive sentences.
3. Students are able to turn active sentences into passive sentences (positive, negative, and
interrogative) using simple present tense
4. Students are able to correctly use passive sentences to-be and verbs in simple present tense

Activity 1 – Observe the following patterns of sentences.


This activity purpose is to help the students identify the pattern of active and passive sentences.

The gardeners take care of the plants carefully (active)

The plants are taken care of carefully (passive)

The patterns shown is the differences of an active sentence and a passive sentence in simple present
tense.
There are some other patterns of passive voice such as positive, negative, and interrogative.

Example:

(+) Children read the books

The books are read

(-) The children don’t read the books

The books are not read

(?) Do the children read the books?

Are the books read?

Active : take/see/go, etc.

Passive : am/are/is + taken/seen/gone, etc.

More examples:

1. Many turtle eggs are stolen every year (passive)


The thieves steal many turtle eggs every year (active)
2. The building is painted every five years (passive)
They paint the building every five years (active)
3. The museum is visited every day (passive)
Thousands of people visit the museum every day (active)

Activity 1 - Observe the following patterns of sentences.

In simple past tense, the passive voice uses the to-be was and were + past participle of the
main verb.

Subject + to-be + past participle


The passive voice past is often used to describe situations when the person who did the
action is unknown or unimportant.

Active Sentences Passive Sentences

He bought a car. A car was bought.

He did not buy a car. A car was not bought.

Did he buy a car? Was a car bought?

She painted the walls. The walls were painted.

I saved them. They were saved.


Activity 2 - Complete the sentences of Passive Voice using Simple Past.
