Top 5 Professional Development Opportunities

from Russell A. Sabella, Ph.D.

Solution Focused Brief Counseling and Parent

Consultation. This experiential workshop is designed
for both beginning and experienced school counselors,
mental health counselors, social workers, psychologists,
educators, other human service professionals, and
educators who want to learn an innovative approach to
empower their clients/consultees/students to recognize
and utilize their resources. This model uses a
systematic, five-step approach in which
students/parents focus on solutions rather than
problems. They are encouraged to think about times
when their problems did not exist, and how these times
contributed to the absence of the problem, and how to
recreate such circumstances in their present situations.
Focus is on the students/parents strengths and abilities
rather than their weaknesses. Solutions are derived by the students/parents themselves
and therefore not only are they more involved in their success, but the solutions fit their
unique lifestyles. Finally, because they find their own solutions that work, often
self-esteem is increased. With this emphasis of counseling on solutions rather than
problems, counseling becomes brief.

Technology Tips, Tricks, and Shortcuts for Educators. Learn about the most
powerful features of various applications including word processing, spreadsheet,
multimedia, and Internet. Dr. Sabella will share his most coveted tips, tricks, and short
cuts to help you become more effective, efficient, and have more fun in your work! Lots
of handouts and time for questions and answers.

Guarding Kids Against High Tech Trouble (Technology Safety). The goal of the
seminar is to alert parents, educators and other caretakers about the dangers that
technology poses to children and to give them tools they can readily use to keep kids
safe and away from high tech trouble. The workshop covers topics such as social
networks (e.g., Myspace.com), sexual predators, threats to privacy such as online
diaries/blogs, cyberbullying and hate, inappropriate web sites and other materials,

inappropriate use of gadgets such as cell phones, mp3 players, game appliances, and
electronic communication such as e-mail, instant messaging, chatroo ms and bulletin
boards. Visit http://GuardingKids.com for more details.

The Data Boot Camp for School Counselors is designed to advance technological
literacy among counselors in a useful and practical manner. Particular attention is given
to using Microsoft Excel™ to make data an important part of your comprehensive school
counseling program. From data-driven decision making, to monitoring progress, to
reporting the positive impact you're having on kids -- this workshop will demystify how
it's done. Workshop content is pre-planned although flexible enough to meet individuals’
specific technological training needs. This workshop is conducted in a computer lab or
with laptops so participants can gain valuable hands-on practice.

Cyberbullying involves the use of information and communication technologies to

support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behavior by an individual or group, with the
intention of harming others. The technology used includes e-mail, message boards,
blogs, instant messaging, cell phone, text messaging, defamatory personal Web sites
and/or online personal polling Web sites. Frequently, media such as sounds, text, video,
altered graphics, and photos are incorporated into the piece to add to the attacks. This
workshop endeavors to help you understand the nature of cyberbulling and provides
helpful tips for prevention and intervention among both bullies and victims.

Go directly to “Through M y Eyes.” This video was made to present to the PTA and the faculty
of my school. The principal said it was "TOO GRAPHIC" and that the agenda was already done
for tonight's meeting. Well now I have decided to share my GRAPHIC life within the walls of her
Middle School with others. Help make a difference by standing up and speaking out about
school violence. I am allowing all comments to prove a point that there is cyber bullying as
well. Victims portrayed in this video are not students of Udall Road School. Anyone may use
this video as long as the creator Patrick Kohlmann is given credit for it.

TIPS AND TRICKS

Microsoft Outlook 2007: Safe Senders and Junk E-Mail
In Microsoft Office Outlook 2007, you can add e-mail addresses to a safe recipients list.
Messages received from safe recipients, and messages you send to them, will then never be
treated as junk e-mail. Here’s how:

1. In an Outlook 2007 mail folder, right-click a message sent to you by the person you want to
identify as a safe recipient.
2. Point to Junk E-mail, and then click Add Recipient to Safe Recipients List.

Developing Your Own Website

by Lisa Saviñón M.Ed
SchoolCounselor.com eNewsletter reader

My first discovery as a Professional School Counselor was the amount of research necessary to
stay informed and truly meet student needs. During both Practicum and Internship, I had the
chance to work with some pretty unique cases, and this meant several long nights of research.
I became very familiar with the wonderful resources available to school counselors on the
Internet. Armed with these new found resources and some amazing professors, I created a
wealth of counseling files, and I gladly shared my files with other students and colleagues. I
don't know how or even when, but eventually I became the go to person for several other
counselors. Even as I write this now, I am assisting a good friend and great counselor design a
crisis plan and safe room model. Soon, I decided to create a distribution list for counselors.
Longtime members of the list will attest that I sent new and valuable resources found during
the course of my latest research expedition, and I sent them often.

My web site came to mind when my distribution e-mails became longer and larger than several
of my friends' accounts could accept. Obviously, I love my job and couldn't ever deny being a
workaholic. Then it hit me, "Why not just build a site for all counselors, future counselors,
families, teachers, and students to use?" My site allows me to post new finds for every group,
and send an e-mail out informing them of the new arrivals. After trying several formats, I
found teach-nology.com (http://www.teach-nology.com/). They offer easy to use free web
sites; free was the key word for me. It has taken me many hours to create a site I am proud
of. Recently, I decided to upgrade my site, adding more storage and capabilities. I think the
$6.95 monthly fee is well worth it. If you are interested in creating your own site, teach-nology
is user friendly and free. They have background themes, page templates, and plenty of room
for storage. It is the best deal for educators, and I can assure you I did a great deal of
research before making that statement.

SchoolCounselor.com eNewsletter Issues 96 - 109

The goal of my site is to share resources, so I welcome you to visit and send resources you
would like me to post. The more the merrier! You can even join my distribution list from there
and watch as we grow, with the latest additions of family and student sections.

Editor’s Note:

Congratulations on a fine looking and effectively functional website Lisa. I would like to add to
Lisa’s great tip about developing an inexpensive yet quality website by letting you know about a
couple of other options as well:

1. Use Google applications to register your domain and have your own website. This costs
$10 per year. You can get started by going to
http://www.schoolcounselor.com/google/index.htm and click on Google Apps.
2. Some counselors are using a free blog such as http://www.blogger.com,
http://www.wordpress.com, or http://www.typepad.com.

Video: Simple, Secure Group Websites

Google Sites makes it easy for anyone to create and manage simple, secure group websites.
You can create and publish new pages with the click of a button, edit web pages like
documents, and move content and pages around as you please. Information is stored securely
online, and you decide who can edit or view the site. Google Sites is powerful enough for a
company intranet, yet simple enough for a family website.

Microsoft Outlook 2007: Use Follow-ups on Sent E-Mail Messages

You're probably used to setting follow-up flags on e-mail messages in your Inbox. Until now,
though, there wasn't much point setting follow-up flags on sent e-mail messages, because you
rarely view your Sent Items folder. Yet it's often useful to set a follow-up flag on a sent e-mail
message; for example, a sales e-mail message might warrant following up after a couple of
days. It's now worth setting follow-up flags on sent e-mail messages, because they will appear
on the To-Do Bar.

To do this:

1. Click the Follow Up flag on the Message tab of the Ribbon when writing your message.
2. Click the follow-up flag you want to use, or set a reminder for the e-mail's recipients.

SchoolCounselor.com eNewsletter Issues 96 - 109

You can customize the follow-up flag. When you set your flag, some basic options like Today
and Tomorrow are instantly available, but if you click Custom, plenty more follow-up options
appear. These include start and end times for the follow-up and required activities. All this
information will appear on your To-Do Bar.

CyberBully Alert software is a tool for parents to equip their children with the ability to
immediately communicate and document any threats or cyberbullying their children experience
when online. This unique software is the result of expert opinions and research in the field of
child development and internet safety. Experts agree that the best way to address
cyberbullying and online threats is to immediately communicate the incident with an adult, as

Cheat with Technology, Get Caught by Technology

Teachers are using new technologies such as text-matching software, webcams, biometric
equipment, and testing centers with cheat-proof computers to combat widespread student
cheating, says U.S. News & World Report. Where teachers and professors once struggled to
keep up with the stratagems of technologically savvy students, they now have recourse to
some of the very same tools used by would-be cheaters and plagiarists. "The electronic
revolution cuts both ways," says economics professor Rick Lotspeich of Indiana State
University, who now has a much easier time when he suspects a student has lifted a passage.
"It makes plagiarism a lot easier, and checking a lot easier," he explains. Teachers are also
fighting cheating by asking students to turn in outlines and drafts so that they can track
student progress, or by creating more real-world assignments that point out the stupidity of
cheating.

Kids Aren't Telling Parents About Cyberbullying

According to the latest UCLA study, 3 out of 4 teens were bullied online last year, yet only 1 in
10 reported it to their parents or another adult. The most common reason for not telling an
adult, according to the teenagers, was that they felt they "need[ed] to learn to deal with it." In
addition, 31% didn't tell their parents because they didn't want their Internet access restricted.

TIPS AND TRICKS

Using Microsoft Outlook and Excel to Conduct Time and Task Analysis
If you are using Microsoft Outook as your calendar. I have figured out a way to use this
program in conjunction with Microsoft Excel and EZANALYZE (www.ezanalyze.com) to conduct
a time and task analysis. The analysis will allow you to also create pie charts that shows the
amount of time spent in different categories of activities. This link is to a handout that I posted
that shows you how this works step by step.

Microsoft Word 2007: Change Default Document Formatting

When you created your first new document in Microsoft Office Word 2007, you may have
noticed that default text formatting (the formatting of the Normal paragraph style) had
changed from the previous version. For example, the new default font is Calibri, line spacing is
a bit expanded, and space is automatically added after each paragraph.

To change font and paragraph formatting defaults for the active document or all new
documents based on the active template, do the following:

SchoolCounselor.com eNewsletter Issues 96 - 109

1. Press CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+S to open the Styles pane (or click the dialog box launch icon in
the Styles section on the Home tab).

2. Click the Manage Styles icon at the bottom of the pane to open the Manage Styles dialog
box.

3. On the Set Defaults tab of the dialog box, change font and paragraph formatting as needed.
Then, at the bottom of the dialog box, click the option to apply settings either only to this
document or to new documents based on the active template.

Microsoft Excel 2007: To Fit a Printout onto a Set Number of Worksheet Pages

1. Click the Page Layout tab on the Ribbon.

2. In the Scale to Fit section, in the Width box, type the number of pages you want the printout

3. In the Height box in the same section, type the number of pages you want the printout to
span vertically.

Microsoft Excel Demo: Use Simple Formulas to do the Math

You can use simple formulas in Excel 2007 to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. For example,
you can use a prewritten formula called the SUM function to find totals — such as your total
monthly expenses. Excel updates the results if the numbers change later. Watch the demo to
see how Excel can do the math for you.

Microsoft Office Outlook 2007: Use Follow-ups on Sent E-Mail Messages

2. Click the follow-up flag you want to use, or set a reminder for the recipients of the e-mail
message.

TIPS AND TRICKS

QUESTION: School Counselor Nancy J. writes, “I need to know how to combine 2 or more
(usually more) Excel databases. our scheduling program will not let me download all
information needed in one file. I spend hours on this. Is Access the best way? Do you have
hints for Access?”

ANSWER: Since you are already using Microsoft Excel, let’s stick with that instead of migrating
over to Access (also because, honestly, Access, in my opinion, is much less user friendly than
Excel, which is not that user friendly to begin with). The trick to getting everything into one
sheet is that the data fields, in this case columns, match exactly. For instance, the first column
may include student ID, second column include number of absences, and so on. If this is the
case, than you can just copy and paste one sheet or even multiple sheets into one master data
file.

I’m guessing, however, that you are probably wondering how to “match up” data for students
from one data set to another. Most commonly, counselors may want to match up each
student’s post scores with their pre-scores on any given performance indicator. For example,
let’s say you have the number of absences for a group of students with whom you are working.
After a few weeks of intervention, you download the same group’s number of absences and
then want to put them side by side in two columns, of course making certain that the post-
absences match the pre-absences for each student. (Note too, that in this example, one should
look at absences for equivalent periods in order to best make comparisons such as Quarter 1
versus Quarter 2).

This can be accomplished several ways including a combination of manually inserted formulas
or using Microsoft Excel Pivot Tables. The easiest way that I know how to do this is to use Dr.
Tim Poynton’s EZANALYZE Amalgamate feature. According to Dr. Poynton’s website
(http://www.ezanalyze.com/help/amalgamate.htm), “The Amalgamate Data function in
EZAnalyze allows you to combine two worksheets in the same Excel file into one, based on a
'Unique Identifier' that exists in both sheets. For example, if you want to merge data that exist
in two different databases (such as NCES and your state Department of Education), you can
merge them together easily using this function. This function adds new variables (columns) to
your sheet for all cases (rows) that have the same Unique Identifier. You can choose whether
or not you want to keep rows of data that do not match.”

Go to the website to learn the steps in doing this and to download the Excel addin (click on
Download on the left side). One tip to know is that this feature only works for combining
multiple sheets that exist in the same file, not different files. So if you do have more than one

SchoolCounselor.com eNewsletter Issues 96 - 109

excel file, you’ll have to first copy and past the data you want to combine in different sheets
using one file.

The Future of Reputation

Daniel Solove, an authority on information privacy law, offers a fascinating account of how the
Internet is transforming gossip, the way we shame others, and our ability to protect our own
reputations. Focusing on blogs, Internet communities, cyber mobs, and other current trends, he
shows that, ironically, the unconstrained flow of information on the Internet may impede
opportunities for self-development and freedom. Longstanding notions of privacy need review,
the author contends: unless we establish a balance among privacy, free speech, and
anonymity, we may discover that the freedom of the Internet makes us less free.

Although you can purchase this book in paperback, the full text of The Future of Reputation is
now available online for free. The front matter to the book is at the beginning of each chapter.

Your Word 2007 documents may contain a lot more information than you realize--tracked
changes, comments, hidden text, private properties, and more. Distributing a document with
this kind of data present can be embarrassing. To make sure you're not revealing too much in a
Word 2007 document, click the Office button at the top left, point to Prepare, and click Inspect
Document in the resulting menu. Word 2003 has no precise equivalent, but you can get some
benefit using the Security tab of the Options dialog. Check the boxes "Remove personal
information from file properties on save" and "Warn before printing, saving, or sending a file
that contains tracked changes or comments."

Microsoft Outlook: Defer your email sending (for many good reasons)
Source: http://lifehacker.com/5151771/top-10-outlook-boosters
Maybe you've finally finished your magnum opus message, but you don't want to send it out at
2:13 a.m. and have your recipients wonder about your sanity. Perhaps you want to be out of
the office when your message about the new coffee pricing hits inboxes. In those and many
other situations, delaying your email sending can be a great idea. You can change the options
on each individual message to delay a sending, as we've explained, but the How-To Geek (this
guy really knows his Outlook, eh?) offers a compelling argument for delaying all Outlook
messages by something like five minutes. That way, you've always got at least a few deep
breaths' time to go back and fix Exactly What You Think About Steve and similar messages.
Here’s how you do it.

Turning Off Paragraph Hyphenation

Need to make sure that a particular paragraph never has any hyphenated words in it? You can
make sure that Word won't automatically add any hyphens by following the easy steps in this
tip. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, Word 2003, and Word
2007.)

The hyphenation tool provided with Word can be very handy when creating a document. There
may be some paragraphs, however, in which you don't want Word to hyphenate words. You
can turn off hyphenation for selected paragraphs by following these steps:

1. Make sure the insertion point is located in the paragraph you don't want to hyphenate.
2. Choose Paragraph from the Format menu. Word displays the Paragraph dialog box. (To
display the dialog box in Word 2007, display the Home tab of the ribbon and click the small
icon at the bottom-right of the Paragraph group.)
3. Make sure the Line and Page Breaks tab is selected. (Click here to see a related figure.)
4. Ensure the Don't Hyphenate check box is selected.
5. Click on OK.

Now, when you choose to do an automatic hyphenation, all the paragraphs formatted for no
hyphenation are skipped, and only those paragraphs that are not formatted that way are
hyphenated. If you use styles, of course, you can make this even easier by setting up some
sort of paragraph style that has the hyphenation setting turned on or off according to your
needs.

Possible Interview Questions for School Counselors

These questions are designed to help you think about and prepare for your school
counselor position interview. These are actual questions sent in by school counselors after an
interview.
http://www.schoolcounselor.com/resources/interview.htm

Feature Article
What’s in Your Web Browser?
I switched from Microsoft Internet Explorer to Mozilla Firefox several years ago and really had
not thought about it very much since. When out in the field doing presentations or while

SchoolCounselor.com eNewsletter Issues 96 - 109

collaborating with colleagues, people who notice me using Firefox as my default browser
continue to ask me about it and so I thought that it was finally time to address the use of web
browsers as an important technological tool.

Indeed, your web browser is one of the critical technological applications that we use today
because we spend so much time communicating, getting information, collaborating, delivering
lessons, and more on the web. As counselors and as people in general, we need a web browser
that is secure, efficient, customizable, easy to use, and works well with other programs.

The biggest factor for me that inspired me to start using a browser other than Internet Explorer
(IE) was the constant bugs and security fixes that were plaguing IE and the need to find
something faster. As you can imagine, I spend a great deal of time on the Web because of my
professional interests in counseling technology as well as my day to day use (communicating,
teaching researching, and learning online, for example). Speed is definitely a factor. Seconds
add up to minutes and even hours over the course of a day and especially over weeks or
months. So, I first turned to Firefox for increased security and speed and Firefox did not
disappoint. As I adapted to this new browser, I also began to see other advantageous features
that I did not anticipate which further reinforced me for using Firefox. For instance, these
included:

– Find As You Type. Rather than using the "find" bar to search for a word on page, just click
anywhere on that page and start typing the word you want. Your cursor will immediately jump
to the first instance of that term. You can use it for links, too. For example, instead of moving
your mouse across the page to a "learn more" link, just start typing the word and when the
cursor finds it, press enter.

– Relatively Small Learning Curve. Firefox uses many of the same keyboard shortcuts as
Internet Explorer(e.g., hitting Ctrl-Home in the address bar to automatically fill in the ".com"
after a word you type) which made migrating easier than I expected.

– Tabbed Browsing. When having multiple web pages open, it is easier to manage (especially
identify and open) the window you want when they are presented in the form of tabs instead of
windows. The analogy may be searching for a file in your filing cabinet by thumbing through
the file tabs instead of opening each and every file.

– Multiple Home Pages. When I start my browser, there are usually several pages that I
want to quickly look at. Firefox allows you to open multiple pages upon launching (click here to
see how).

– Accelerated Development. Because Firefox was developed as part of an Open Source

project, thousands of independent programmers have been working on its development, finding

SchoolCounselor.com eNewsletter Issues 96 - 109

security holes before they are exploited, developing new applications, and overall increasing its
utility.

– Smart Keywords. Smart Keywords are an easy way to search websites right from the
Address or Location bar. Lets say you want to get to ASCA’s Ethical Standards document.
Instead of navigating .. Click, click, click. Just type in “school counselor ethics” without the
quotes in the address bar and it should come up in a set of search results.

– Keyword Shortcuts (a.k.a. Custom Keywords). One of my absolute favorite time savers
is Keywords which allows me to type in a single letter or word in the address bar and
automatically be directed to a web page. So, for instance, I can type in the letter “f” and be
directed to one of my favorite professional forums. Typing in the letter “g” brings me to a page
at my work that I have to visit quite frequently throughout the day. (By the way, if you are on
the webpage and quickly need to get to the address bar, hit F6 or CTRL-L on your keyboard
which is faster thank clicking on it with your mouse). Click here for a nice tutorial.

– About:Config. For those school counselor who are a bit more tech savvy, you can easily get
under the hood of Firefox and change its advanced settings. about:config is a feature of Mozilla
applications which lists application settings (known as preferences) that are read from the
profile files prefs.js and user.js, and from application defaults. Many of these preferences are
not present in the Options or Preferences dialog. Using about:config is one of several methods
of modifying preferences and adding other "hidden" ones. Simply type “about:config” without
the quotes in the address bar to access them (see http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config).

Add-Ons

Although firefox has many useful features, if you are like me, you want more. Fortunately,
Firefox has incorporated the ability to install add-ons. Add-ons extend Firefox, letting you
personalize your browsing experience. There is an amazing selection of add-ons, some better
than others, available online at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/.

Here are the add-ons I use which I have found to help me become significantly more effective
and efficient in my work:

1. AutoCopy. Select text on a web page and it's automatically copied to the clipboard.
That’s right. After I highlight something on a website with my mouse, I don’ have to hit
CTRL-C or go to the Edit, Copy menu to copy it into memory, it’s done automatically. I
can skip that step and go right to pasting what I copied into the application that I want.
Also, this add-on has another neat feature called append URL. I can copy something on
a website, right click on it, choose append URL and the website address automatically
gets appended to the content that is copied into memory.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/add-on/383

SchoolCounselor.com eNewsletter Issues 96 - 109

2. DownThemAll!. DownThemAll is a download manager which features an advanced

accelerator that increases speed up to 400% and it allows you to pause and resume
downloads at any time. Also, DownThemAll is fast, reliable and easy-to-use. It lets you
download all the links or images contained in a webpage and much more: you can
refine your downloads by fully customizable criteria to get only what you really want!
This means I can tell it to download all files or only certain files (e.g. PDF, MP3, PPT,
DOCS) from a web page. So, when I’m on a web page with links to multiple documents,
PowerPoints, or other resources, I can quickly download them all at once with just a
couple of clicks. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/201

3. Download Statusbar. With this one, I can view and manage downloads from a tidy
statusbar - without the download window getting in the way of your web browsing.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/26

4. IE Tab. One of my very favorites, with this add-on, I can easily see how a web page is
displayed in Internet Explorer (even when I’m still using Firefox) with just one click and
then switch back to Firefox. Also, this allows me to continue using Firefox even when
the site requires Internet Explorer. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419

5. New Tab King. This extension adds a useful dashboard with recently used bookmarks
and links to the Firefox blank tab page, so you can quickly access frequently used web
sites. Using the extension is simple enough—just use the Ctrl+T shortcut key, and the
new tab page will show up with shortcuts to launch applications, the most used web
sites and recently closed tabs You can also get a quick glance on the sites you use the
most, by period of the day and an easy search box.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10828

6. Open Download.Allows you to open any file from the internet into the OS assigned
program. This is similar to IE's 'Open' or 'Run' file download functionality.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/207

7. Send Link Button. Ever found yourself on an interesting Web site that you wanted to
send over to a friend? Now instead of having to cut and paste the URL into your E-mail
client of choice, now you have a one button solution. Send Link Button adds a new
button to the toolbar that sends the link for the current web page you are on to your
email software so that you can send share it with others over email more quickly.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1770

8. Marks (formerly Foxmarks). Xmarks is an excellent bookmarking add-on. Install it

on all your computers to keep your bookmarks and (optionally) passwords backed up
and synchronized. Xmarks also helps you uncover the best of the web based on what
millions of people are bookmarking. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/add-
on/2410

SchoolCounselor.com eNewsletter Issues 96 - 109

9. Amazon Hot Stuff. Amazon Hot! Stuff allows you to easily navigate Amazon, and
access to lists such as Bestsellers, Hot New Releases, Most Wished For, Movers And
Shakers all at your finger tips. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/11542

10. Google Toolbar. Direct access to Google services from a toolbar within your browser.
No need to go to Google.com to do a search. Also, this powerful toolbar has other
features including AutoFill which can automatically complete online forms for you with
your basic information (name, address, phone, email), great for online sweepstakes.
http://www.google.com/tools/firefox/toolbar/FT5/intl/en/index.html

An important note: You should choose and use your add-ons carefully and sparingly. The more
add-ons you install, the slower Firefox will run and the greater the chance that an add-on will
cause a glitch. I have installed wonderful add-ons in the past that I found helpful although
made Firefox on my computer cause terrible hang-ups. Once I uninstalled it, Firefox came back
to normal. Ten to 15 add-ons is probably enough.

Disadvantages
There are a couple of disadvantages to using Firefox, although not enough to make me quit
using it and go to something else. One disadvantage is that some websites count on Microsoft
Internet Explorer to work correctly and do not work quite right in Firefox. For instance I have
trouble listening to Sirius Satellite Radio and calling up a “Watch Now” Netflix movie using
Firefox. When accessing my Outlook mail at work from the web, I find too that it works best in
Internet Explorer. But, that’s what the add-on IE Tab is for (see above). Using the IE Tab add-
on, I can just add these sites to the list of sites to open in Firefox using the IE engine, problem
solved. The only other disadvantage that I’ve run into, and its not a big one, is that Firefox
takes just a bit little longer to start up because it is not built in to the Operating System like
Internet Explorer and Safari.

Other Options
Still want to check out some other options in web browsers, the competition is definitely steep:

– For Windows users who just want fast, simple browsing, you might check out the minimalist
Google Chrome. Google Chrome is a browser that combines a minimal design with
sophisticated technology to make the web faster, safer, and easier.
http://www.google.com/chrome/

– An up and coming browser which I have not used yet although is recommended by reviewers
is Flock for people who "live on the Web" because it has all the speed, security and options of
Firefox 3 but builds in a blog editor, photo-uploader and big sidebar to keep current with social

SchoolCounselor.com eNewsletter Issues 96 - 109

networking friends and RSS feeds. A horizontal photo bar shows thumbnails from photo-sharing
sites. You can try this one at http://www.flock.com/

– Opera. Opera Software’s browser is a really good piece of work. Billing itself as “The fastest
browser on Earth!”, it is a free browser with excellent standards support.

– Safari. Safari is Apple’s own web browser, and for its first few years was only available to
lucky Mac owners, coming pre-installed on all new Macs since 2003. A Windows version was
released in June 2007. Safari is a clean, fast browser based on the WebKit rendering engine
that also powers the Linux browser Konqueror. (http://www.apple.com/safari/)

4 Signs Your Children May Be Involved With Cyberbullying

The simple fact is, no matter how much we love our little angels, sometimes they engage in
behaviors of which we cannot approve. Like cyberbullying. Then it is up to us as trusted adults
to step in and work with our children to correct their behavior. But unlike physical bullying
which may leave tangible signs (scratches, torn clothes, bruises), cyberbullying may be
undetectable. So, how do you know if your children are engaging in cyberbullying behaviors?
We turn once again to expert guest blogger Alison Trachtman Hill.

On this Day
The Commission’s Memorial Day anthem, “On This Day” was composed by Charles Strouse,
award-winning composer of Annie and Bye Bye Birdie. It is an inspiring song that honors
America’s fallen and the families they left behind. The song helps promote and inspire the tone
of this annual observance: to connect us all as Americans and to sustain the American spirit. By
remembering those who died for our country, we become more aware of our identity as
Americans. The song has been created not to show a financial profit, but to inspire patriotism
and pride.

Highlights from SchoolCounselor.com

Using PowerPoint and PhotoStory3 to create a Narrated Presentation
Bring your accountability reports (and other presentations) to life with a free program called
Microsoft Photo Story 3. This method is very similar to doing narrated PowerPoints although
probably a bit easier and with a higher "cool" effect. In this method, you will export your PPT
slides as graphics and then use those graphics to narrate within Photo Story 3. Your product is
a video. Realize, though, that when you use this technique, the animation within PowerPoint
does not transfer. Instead, you will get a panning effect which is also very nice. This video is
one of the many you will find on the Data Boot Camp for School Counselors and Administrators
- CD available from www.schoolcounselor.com.

Save Time With Excel's Double-Click Tricks

If you have to deal with boring spreadsheets on a daily basis, every tiny little trick that saves
you time is worth it—and the Pointy Haired Dilbert blog runs down a whole list of useful tricks.
The article runs down a list of double-click actions you can use to save time in Excel—for
instance, if you want to resize a number of columns at once you can simply select them and
double-click on the separator to make Excel automatically resize those columns to the width of
the content. Want to fill in a series of numbers or a formula all the way down a column? You
can select the first few and double-click on the bottom right-hand corner of the selection to
make it auto-fill all the way down as long as there is data in the next column.

WWW BootCamp Videos
In 2005, I designed a CD Tutorial called the World Wide Web Boot Camp for School Counselors.
Some of the content is a bit outdated although most of it still contains many useful tips, tricks,
and shortcuts. I've decided to trim it down a bit with the parts that are most relevant and
useful and publish it on this website. As you already know, since 2005, much has changed and
so I encourage you to use this as a beginning place or supplement to an overall
[comprehensive] professional development plan for advancing your technological literacy.

The WWW Boot Camp video tutorials are step-by-step lessons that will assist you in navigating
the web using browsers such as Microsoft™ Internet Explorer and a search engine such as
Google.com™. There are over 30 videos so make certain to scroll down the menu to see all of

Teens and Mobile Phones Over the Past Five Years: Pew Internet Looks Back
Teenagers have previously lagged behind adults in their ownership of cell phones, but several
years of survey data collected by the Pew Internet & American Life Project show that those
ages 12-17 are closing the gap in cell phone ownership. The Project first began surveying
teenagers about their mobile phones in its 2004 Teens and Parents project when a survey
showed that 45% of teens had a cell phone. Since that time, mobile phone use has climbed
steadily among teens ages 12 to 17 – to 63% in fall of 2006 to 71% in early 2008.

“Dealing with PDF Files in Outlook

As you might know, when you receive an attachment (e.g., Word or Excel) in a Microsoft
Outlook email, you can single click on it and preview the file without having to open in it
(double clicking on the file will open it). However, there is not available a built in previewer for
PDF files. This free file does the trick. After installing, you will be able to preview PDF files
within Microsoft Outlook. The trick though is that, Foxit must be your default PDF viewer. If
not, it will launch Acrobat and defeat the whole purpose of the quick preview. I recommend
Foxit over Adobe as a PDF reader anyway.

To download free Foxit PDF reader (click here).

To download the Foxit PDF viewer:

those messages are starting to get a bit stale….

The Internet as a Diversion

Three-quarters of online economic users--those Americans who use the internet to keep up with
news about the economic recession or their own personal finances--go online to relax and take
their minds off of the recession, according to an April 2009 survey by the Pew Research
Center's Internet & American Life Project. Listening to music and watching online videos are
among the most common of the activities we evaluated; roughly half of all online economic
users have done each of these activities to relax. Approximately one-third of online economic
users have played online games or chatted with friends (on a social networking site, listserv or
other online group), while an additional 22% have taken their minds off of their economic or
financial circumstances by creating or posting content online. Young Americans in particular go
online in great numbers to relax by watching videos, listening to music, playing games or
chatting with friends.

TIPS AND TRICKS

Google is on a roll, again! Check out these recent

updates ...
Google Forms (Data Collection): Add page break and go to page in forms
Have you ever wanted to create a form that changes which questions to show next based on
an answer received earlier in the form? The two features we launched today make that easy.
First, we've added one of the most requested features for forms: page breaks. Now it is easy to
create a form with multiple pages by going to "Add item" and selecting "Page break." We've
also added another highly requested feature, logic branching. Once you've created a form with
multiple pages, you can select "Go to page based on answer" to control the flow of your form
based on the user's answers. For example, you can create a form asking the person to select
their language and then direct them to a form in the correct language. If you want to see both
of these new features in action, let us know what your favorite holiday is.

Page breaks and go to page open up a whole new realm of possibilities. For example, you can
create a product survey that asks a different set of questions based on whether someone has
used the product before or a conference feedback form that branches off based on the session
someone attended. You can even create your own interactive murder mystery or adventure
using a Google form, share it with your friends and publish it in the public templates gallery.
We hope you enjoy these new additions to forms!

Google Docs: Translation functions in spreadsheets

Get Your Own Dropbox

Dropbox is software that syncs your files online and across your computers. Put your files
into your Dropbox on one computer, and they'll be instantly available on any of your other
computers that you've installed Dropbox on (Windows, Mac, and Linux too!) Because a copy
of your files are stored on Dropbox's secure servers, you can also access them from any
computer or mobile device using the Dropbox website. Let's say you're editing a document at
home. As soon as you click 'Save', Dropbox will sync this same file to all your other
computers (and now your iPhone!) instantly and automatically. It's as if you saved the
document to all of your computers. This gives you the freedom to work on any of your
computers and always have the files you need.

You can easily share entire folders or photo albums with Dropbox. Simply put the folders you
want to share in your Dropbox, and invite people to them. You can also send people links to
specific files within your Dropbox. This makes Dropbox perfect for team projects. Every time
you put a file in your Dropbox folder it is automatically backed up to our secure servers. If
your computer has a melt-down your files are safe on Dropbox and can be restored at any
time. Our free 2GB account is perfect for backing up your documents. We offer larger
accounts (up to 100GB) for backing up your music and video collections.

Gmail (Google mail): Have Google Help You Remember Email Addresses
Source: Broncobytes
“Got the wrong Bob?” keeps track of email addresses you email most often. If you send an
email to a group of people that usually includes, say, Bob Smith, but accidentally add Bob
Roberts, the Lab will prompt you to make sure you didn’t mean to exclude Bob Smith. Google
has also changed the “Suggest more recipients” Lab name to “Don’t forget Bob.” This Lab is
similar to “Got the wrong Bob?” in that it keeps track of groups of addresses you often send
emails to, and if you leave someone off the group list, it’ll prompt you to make sure you aren’t
leaving somebody out by mistake.

Written and produced by Professor Christopher D. Green of York University, "This Week in the
History of Psychology" is a delightful and engaging podcast series. Its intended audience is
students in university level courses on the history of psychology, but a wide variety of persons
will find the work here compelling. Each week Professor Green has an interview with an expert
who talks about a key event from the annals of psychology. The interviews begin with a short
overview of said event, along with a celebration of the week's birthdays and other related
anniversaries from the world of psychology. Currently the site has several dozen interviews,
including discussions on Freud's only trip to the United States and Emil Kraeplelin, the man
behind the modern categories of mental illness.
