Giving Back to the Community in More Ways Than One

BRIDGEWATER, VA—24 September, 2019. A small automotive shop located in

Bridgewater, VA isn’t just known for their auto body work, but also their sense of help in the

community. Hussey’s automotive is owned and operated by Dusty Hussey, who has been

running Hussey’s for over 20 years.

Bridgewater is a small town on the outskirts of Harrisonburg. There is one high school in the

town, Turner Ashby High School. Born and raised in Bridgewater, and as a Turner Ashby

alumnae, Hussey never fails to help the community whenever he is given the opportunity.

“A lot of my buddies from high school still live in the area as well and have children of their own

that attend Turner Ashby now. I feel like it’s my duty as a Bridgewater citizen to support my old

high school and friend’s kids and give people in the community a place to sell their belongings,”

Hussey says. Hussey’s Automotive’s lot is used for more than car work. The town of

Bridgewater holds an annual yard sale once a year when individuals line the sides of the streets

to set up their own yard sales. Many Bridgewater citizens use Hussey’s lot as a place to set up

shop.

Along with the yard sale, Turner Ashby agriculture students sell chicken on the weekends in the

parking lot to raise money for their agriculture department and different events they have in the

upcoming year. Riley Claytor, Turner Ashby freshman says, “Hussey’s is a nice place for sales

since its located in the dead center of Bridgewater. Every car going through the town passes by,

so it’s hard for people to just want to pass and not stop to support our fundraising for school.”

Car washes, bake sales, and more are held year-round by Bridgewater citizens on Hussey’s

Automotives’ lot. “I’m just happy that doing something as simple as letting people use my lot for

different activities can help the community” Dusty says. Hussey’s Automotive has no intentions

of closing or leaving the town of Bridgewater anytime soon. The shop has been up and running

since 1974, when Wayne Hussey, Dusty’s Father, opened up and he plans on continuing the

business in remembrance of him.
