Truly EmpowHERed
When I turned eleven years old and was on my way to the 6th grade my mom decided
that she wanted me to get involved with a group called EmpowHERment which works towards
“Empowering young girls through Talent Development, Advocacy and Mentorship &
Development”. The event was a one day session on a Saturday and of course as an eleven year
old I just wanted to spend my Saturday at home in front of the television, but I did not have a say
in whether or not I went. I went to sleep that Friday night not knowing what was in store for me
I woke up the next day, got a shower, got dressed and hopped into the car and I was on
my way to an event that would change my life for the better. I got out the car and walked into the
school where the event was being held and I was welcomed by at least twelve cheerleaders
and I truly felt welcomed. I went to the registration table and they handed me a notebook and
encouraged me to write down things that happened during the day and that really resonated with
me. I thought that it was kind of weird that they wanted me to write about things during the day
because I thought that I was just going to have to listen to people talk all day and be bored out of
my mind.
Love 2
As the day went further along I was actually really surprised by how much I had written
down because I really only expected to write down maybe a few names of the presenters but I
had written down a lot of useful information that could be used for everyday life and for writing
purposes. We were told that we needed to find some people in our lives that would be interested
in helping us with anything and telling us when we were doing things right and when we were
doing things wrong. I took that to heart when it came to my writing because to this day I still
have plenty of people check over my writing to make sure that I am getting my point across and
that when I am telling a fictional story it seems interesting and the reader understands whatever I
write.
Fast forward seven years and the awesome organization that I originally wanted nothing
to do with has given me so many amazing opportunities. I have gotten the chance to interview on
the radio, write two speeches on how the organization has changed my life having the honour of
introducing Dianne Hudson, the former Executive Producer of the Oprah Winfrey Show. Each
time I had to speak, I was so thankful to have had some powerful people, when it comes to
written and spoken word, help me with my writing and speaking, to make sure that I was keeping
the audience awake. I have taken all of my experiences through that group and have always kept
them in mind when it comes to writing so that I can be that best writer that I can be.
