Learning Objective 4.7 The student will investigate and understand the
organization of the solar system. Key concepts include
Content

a) the planets in the solar system;

b) the order of the planets in the solar system; and
c) the relative sizes of the planets.
Online Activity This online activity helps students understand the planets and
solar system by clicking on any planet on the simulation. After
clicking on the planet, the simulation will give the student
information on whatever planet they clicked on. For example,
if the student clicks on Earth, the website will tell the student
that the Earth has one large moon and explains why Earth is
able to hold life. The simulation also shows Earth and the
moon revolving around Earth. This activity would be great
after a lesson on the solar system, and as a review they can
click on whatever planet or moon they’d like to read the
information on it. The simulation is also great visually and
gives the student an idea on what the solar system looks like,
the moons and plants, and how far away some planets are
from one another. During the online simulation, it would be a
great way for the class to have a discussion on something new
they learned while looking at the simulation. After looking at
the simulation, the students can write down something new
they learned and share it with the class. The activity is good to
help students learn what they missed in the initial solar system
lesson, and a good way for the students to visually see what
they learned in the solar system lesson, which is great for
students who learn best visually. Students and teacher should
be able to hold a discussion online as well in an online
classroom so the students can share something new, they
learned while viewing the online simulation. All the students
would need during the online discussion after viewing the
simulation is a microphone and a white board for the students
to write out anything they learned so the other students can
see and write notes to themselves if it is also something new
for them as well.
