Subject Oral Language

Grade Level Kindergarten

Learning Objective K.4 The student will identify, say, segment, and blend various
units of speech sounds.
Content

b) Identify and produce words that rhyme.

Activity The purpose of this lesson is for students to be able to construct

and recognize words that rhyme. In order to do the activity, the
students will be using a SMART Board where they will play a
game of “Candy Bowl Ball”.

The teacher can explain to students that they will need to be

gentle for the activity. Students will be using a koosh ball (or
anything similar) to toss at the SMART Board for the activity, so
teachers should make sure the area is clear of breakables and
other students. Teachers can use tape to place a mark on the
floor for students to stand on when they throw the ball.

Using the koosh ball, students will toss it at the SMART Board
and try to hit the different pieces of candy in the bowl. Next,
words relating to Halloween will pop up. The student will then
say out loud a word that rhymes with the word on the board.
Words may be hit more than once, and the teacher can write
down words that have already been used so students can come
up with different ones. Once a word pops up and the student
correctly says a word that rhymes, the teacher can hit the back
button. This will display the starting screen with the candy bowl.
The next student may take their turn.
Pedagogy

This activity could be done in groups or individually. Teachers

could reward students with Halloween themed prizes for
correctly coming up with words that rhyme.
