SWANDI SINURAT, 2018. A diagnosis of students’ errors in solving linear
equations of one variable at 7th grade students of junior high school number 21 Kota Bengkulu. Thesis of mathematic education study program, faculty of teacher training and education universitas bengkulu. Supervisor, Drs. Rusdi, M.Pd, and Co-Supervisor, DewiRahimah, S.Pd., M.Ed. This research aimed to diagnose kinds of error and factor of students’ error in solving linear equations of one variable. This study used descriptive research with combination of research method. The subject of this research were 18 of 7-7 students of junior high school number 21 Kota Bengkulu 2017/2018 school year. The instrument and the technique of collecting data used in this research were test and interview. In the analyzing of data, the researcher used validity, reliability, level of difficulty and distinguishing test. The result of this research showed that kind of error made by students was error in understanding the concept of linear equations of one variable of 33.34%, error in algebraic operation on the sections of the left and right sections or at the time of grouping similar variables of 47.22%, error in determining the resolution of an equation using the operations of addition of 41.67%, error in determining the resolution of an equation using subtraction operation of 41.67%, error in determining the resolution of equations using multiplication operations of 22.23%, error in determining the resolution of an equation using the operating division of 36.12%, error in changing the coefficient of the variable so that the coefficient being 1 of 8.34%. The factors that caused the errors were: a) students can not distinguish the coefficient, variables and constants, b) students did not understand the concept of grouping similar variables, c) errors of students in writing a mark on each tribe and students also have not yet understand the concept of multiplication sign of positive or negative sign, d) students still don't understand determines the KPK to subtracting fractions, e) students are still less understand how to equate both sides, f) students did not understand the steps of completion problem, g) students are still less understand how to equate both sides in the form of fractions
