Career Interview

1.
For my assignment, I interviewed Norman John Aranda, whom I call Mr.Aranda. His phone
number is 317-753-4968. He is employed by Marian County Health Department which has
recently changed its name to Eskenazi Health. He was the hospital’s attorney but has since been
promoted as the Vice President of Administration. Our interview was conducted via facetime.

2.
Mr. Aranda’s work environment has changed in the past couple of years. For a long period of
time, he spent working at his office at the law firm, and occasionally at the hospital. However,
with the recent promotion and “old age”, he jokes, a typical work day has been mostly at home.
He majority of his time is dealing with paper work, and making phone calls. His routine before
his promotion was like that as well. He had to deal with a lot of paperwork, as well as the
occasional hearing.

3.
Mr. Aranda states that he has a love-hate relationship with the social aspect of his job. He enjoys
his colleagues, however, it frustrates him that in order to complete one task, there has to be a lot
of people involved. Although he knows it is necessary, he does not find it efficient. Also, when
there are cases, it tends to be a bit stressful. Regardless, he really enjoys his occupation.

4.
To be sucessful at his occupation either as a lawyer or the position he holds rught now, he
believes that it takes a great communicator, someone who has an assertive personality and
dedication. His career is based off of fighting for what is right and fair. Although you must stand
true to your opinions, there are times you need to take a step back and understand the opinions of
others. The characteristics he listed makes a great negotiator, and negotiation along with problem
solving is very important.

5.
Mr. Aranda simply stated that his childhood was not as fortunate as my generation. He was not
exposed to education as much as my friends and I are. Therefore, growing up he did not think
much about acadamia as much as he thought about music. He loved and still loves music. He
loves opera, classic rock and takes after his mother with the love of classic literature.

6.
Mr. Aranda attended Indiana University and was an Economics Major. Mr. Aranda took the
more business side of law, therefore his degree helped him majorly. Today, hisoccupation
requires him to know a lot about the market and money and such. He believes that Economics
also improved his critical thinking and problem solving skills that were critical to the exam he
had to pass to be a lawyer.
7.
When Mr. Aranda was in college, he joined ROTC. He briefly exlained it to be a military
program that pays all costs and tuition. Therefore, his first full time job was serving in the Navy.
He is still currently working for the navy as a part of the reserves. After that, he was a prosecutor
in Florida. After starting a family, Mr. Aranda moved to Indiana to work for the Marian Country
Health department as one of the hospital lawyers and has climbed his way up to the Vice
President position.

8.
The biggest influence on Mr. Aranda’s career is motivation. He was not raised in a high income
family which motivated him to have a stable income as an adult to take care of them. Throughout
Mr. Aranda’s life he had to always find loopholes in order to attain a proper education so that
motivation carried him to attain a good job. Adding on to that, his family situation influenced
him to better his own family situation. His kids are the source of his motivation to work hard and
provide all the things that he did not have.

9.
Mr. Aranda has had to sacrifice a lot to get to where he is. He had to sacrifice a lot of time and he
had to put in a lot of hard work. However, he would not change one thing because he feels very
lucky to be where he is at right now.

10.
Mr. Aranda stated that he had to fail multiple times. He explained that he was never a great
student. He was not great at school in highschool and learning math was a difficult task, he jokes.
Mr. Aranda confessed that he barely made it by in highschool, so he had to compensate through
dedication and hard work when he attended Indiana University.

11.
Mr. Aranda states that the advice he gives himself and constantly reminds his kids is: “you can
do it!”. He believes this simple set of advice is helpful to a recent college graduate as well. He
says that the real world is tough and there are many obstacles you must face. However, put in the
hard work and everything will eventually find its place.

12. for my last question, I asked Mr. Aranda about what he wish he knew when he was in
college. Being the strong advocate for “hard work” that he is, he replied that “hard work pays
off”. Mr. Aranda acknowledges that the statement is cliché, but he stands by his answer.
