Fuss Free Baby Blanket

More of a recipe than a pattern. This is an easily customisable, simple baby
blanket knit in the round which avoids the need for a fiddly start with DPNs. A
small garter stitch square is knit flat and stitches are picked up around the
square to work in the round. Increases are then worked at the ‘corners’ every
other round and you can knit merrily away until your yarn supply or patience
is exhausted, whichever comes first. Add in stripes to use up stash yarn, work
in a single classic colour or throw in some purl ridges for texture – the world is
your oyster.

MATERIALS: 5mm circular needles: 60cm long and 80-100cm long

Any superwash aran or heavy worsted weight yarn. Sample here shown in
Stella Alpina Edelweiss. Colours: 011 off-white; 022 navy; 057 yellow; 042
green; 065 mid-blue

YARDAGE: Approx 1100 metres (1200 yards) GAUGE: 18 stitches to 4 inches

NOTIONS: 4 stitch markers (1 in contrasting colour)

PATTERN

SET-UP FOR CENTER PANEL

Using colour #1 CO 25 stitches.

Work 50 rows in garter stitch (25 garter ridges). Slip 1 stitch purlwise at the beginning of each row.

Bind off loosely.

BEGIN WORKING IN ROUND

Using Colour #2, and a 60cm diameter circular needle pick up and knit 25 stitches along one side of
your garter stitch square. Place marker when you reach the corner.

Repeat with the remaining 3 sides, using a different colour marker after picking up and knitting along
the last side to denote the start of the round. You are now working in the round.

ROUND #1: Knit all stitches – check there are 25 stitches between each stitch marker and adjust if
needed. Slip each marker as you come to it. TIP: for a neater finish knit all picked up stitches tbl.

ROUND #2: kfb of 1st stitch *K to 1 stitch before marker, kfb, sm, kfb*, repeat between *…* 3 more
times

ROUND #3: Knit, slipping markers as you come to them.

ROUND #4: Repeat round #2

Repeat rounds 3 and 4. At this point, feel free to work according to your whim. Change colours, add
stripes or work in a solid colour – the choice is up to you.

When changing colours try to add in the new colour on a row #3 – this avoids a ‘bump’ of the new
colour showing up in the kfb stitch.

Work until the blanket is desired size – sample shown is approx. 40 inches (104cm) along each side.

TO FINISH
Switch to garter stitch (K 1 row, P 1 row) for 10 rounds to produce 5 garter stitch ridges. This will
prevent the finished blanket from curling. Bind off loosely. If your bind-off tends to be tight – go up a
needle size or two.
