Standards (State and ISTE Standards for Students): State: Obtain, evaluate, and communicate geological and
biological information to determine the types of organisms that live in major biomes. a. Analyze and interpret data
collected through geographic research and field investigations (e.g., relief, topographic, and physiographic maps;
rivers; forest types; watersheds) to describe the biodiversity by region for the state of Alabama (e.g., terrestrial,
freshwater, marine, endangered, invasive).
ISTE: Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative
artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.
Objectives: Be able to name the five major biomes, the climate in each, animals that live there, and
vegetation.
Differentiation Strategies (How will the lesson address the various learning styles of the students and the
needs of those with special needs?): partner learning, explicit direct instruction, multiple activities
addressing the same topic to increase the amount of times students hear, read, and type/write information
ENGAGEMENT:
Created a Voki to play at the start of the class period as a fun way to introduce the new topic

EXPLORATION:
Students will use a “map” padlet and “drop pins” in different regions that represent the five different major
biomes.

EXPLANATION:
Students will answer the following questions using the attached prezi:
1) Relate the descriptive information in the prezi to identify the location of each biome in the
presentation.
2) Compare the temperature deciduous forest with the tropical rain forest.
3) Contrast the desert and savanna.
4) Explain the climate of the tundra.
Approved January, 2013
5) Select one biome and construct an illustration that accurately describes the climate, plant life, and
animal life present in that biome.
