INTRODUCION
The workability of a concrete mix is defined as the ease with which it can be
mixed, transported, placed and compacted in position.

Slump test is carried out to measures the consistency of plastic concrete. It is

suitable for detecting changes in workability. This test is being used extensively on
construction site.

OBJECTIVE
We as a student are able to explain the procedure of slump test. We also be able
to identify the use of concrete mix based on slump value.

1
APPARATUS
The mould shall be in the form of frustrum of cone having the following dimension
as shown in figure 2.0.

figure 2.0

The mould shall be provided with suitable foot pieces as well as handles to
facilitate lifting, a non absorbent horizontal rigid plate with smooth surface, scoop, steel
rule and trowel, rag, thermometer .the apparatus used for the slump test are shown in
figure 3.0

PROCEDURE

1. Take representative sample approximately
about 15 kg from the fresh concrete.
2. Ensure the internal surface of the mould is clean
and damp but free from superfluous moisture
before commencing the test.
3. Place the mould on the smooth, horizontal, rigid,
and non-absorbent surface free from vibration
and shock.

Hold the mould firmly against the surface below.

4. Fill in three layers each approximately one-third
of the height of the mould when tamped.

Tamp each layer with 25 strokes of the tamping

5. rod, the strokes being distributed uniformly over
the cross-section of the layer.

3
After the top layer has been tamped, strike off
6. the concrete level with the top of the mould with
a sawing and rolling motion of the tamping rod.

With the mould still held down, clean from the

7. surface below any concrete which may have
fallen onto it or leaked from the lower edge of
the mould.

Remove the mould from the concrete by rising it

8. vertically, slowly and carefully in 5 to 10
seconds, in such a manner as to impart
minimum lateral or torsional movement to the
concrete.

The entire operation from the start of filling to

9. the removal of the mould shall be carried out
without interruption and shall be completed
within 150 seconds.

4
Immediately after the mould is removed,
measure the slump to the nearest 5 mm using a
10. measuring scale to determine the difference
between height of the mould and highest point if
the specimen.

DISCUSSION

5
CONCLUSION

6
In general and can be concluded that there is no direct relationship between
workability of the fresh concrete and the strength of the hardened concrete. The reason
is that strength is determined primarily by the water/cementratio provided the concrete
is properly compacted, whereas workability isaffected by many other factors as well.
It may also be concluded that the condition exist that water contentvariation is the
predominant cause of variation of workability, strength may be also to be expected to
correlate with the results of a single- point workability test and the design grade of 25 is
over-achieved to grade 38.
