Number 1. The world’s driest desert, In most of the Aracama Desert in northern Chile, it rain
regularly, between two and four times a century. But in parts of the desert, it has never rained so
far. Number 2, The Yellow River, it carries millions of tons of yellow sand from the deserts of
Central China, which give the river a yellowish colour. Number 3, a place where the water is
saltier than others. The Dead Sea is not really a sea, but a lake. The hot desert sun evaporates the
water as quickly as it flows in, leaving salt and other minerals. As a result, the Dead Sea is seven
times saltier than the sea. Number 4, The Black Sea, it centainly is not black!. The name
probably comes from the black clouds which can cause storms in the area.

Number 5, the country with the most extreme climate. Two of the hottest and coldest
temperatures ever recorded were in the same country Argentina. A temperature of 49˚C was
recorded in the town of Rivadavia on 11th December 1905 and -33˚C in Sarmiento in june 1907,
that’s a difference of 82˚C. Number 6, the world’s longest mountain range. In South America,
the Andes stretch more than 7,000 km from Lake Maracaibo in the north to Tierra del Fuego in
the south, the whole length of the continent and a distance greater than New York to London.

Number 7, the country with the world’s longest coastine. Canada has the world’s longest
coastline just over 240,000 km. as a single line, the coastline would go round the Earth six
times!. Number 8, a place who have 150 canals but no cars and roads. In the city of Venice in the
north-east of Italy, no cars are allowed into this historic city. The only way to get around is on
foot, by boat or water taxi. It’s famous for its historic palaces, churches and art galleries. And
number 9, Greenland, is more white than green(85% is permanently covered in snow and ice).
One idea is that the first people who arrived there saw it in spring, that’s why they gave the name
Greenland.

The Bowler family spent three months in a London home without a telephone, fridge,
computers, radio, TV fast food or central heating. TV cameras recorded their day. The Bowlers
wore clothes from 1900. Ate only food which was available in England at that time, and cooked
their meals on a single stove which also gave them their hot water.

Paul Bowler still went to work everday(dressed in nineteenth-century uniform) and the
children went to school as normal. They changed their clothes on the way to and from school and
their classmates did not know about their unusual home life.
