DIFFERENTIAL CALCULUS
Rolle’s Theorem – Lagrange’s Mean Value Theorem- Maxima and Minima – Taylor’s

and Maclaurin’s Theorem.

MULTIVARIABLE CALCULUS (DIFFERENTITATION)


II Total derivatives - Jacobians – Maxima, Minima and Saddle points - Lagrange’s method 9
of undetermined multipliers – Gradient, curl and derivatives.
DOUBLE INTEGRATION
III Double integrals in Cartesian coordinates – Area enclosed by the plane curves 9
(excluding surface area) – Green’s Theorem (Simple Application).
TRIBLE INTEGRATION
Triple integrals in Cartesian co-ordinates – Volume of solids (Sphere, Ellipsoid,

Tetrahedron) using Cartesian co-ordinates. Gauss Divergence Theorem and Stoke’s
Theorem – Simple Application involving cubes and rectangular parellopiped.
MATRICES
Eigen values and Eigen vectors – Properties of Eigen values and Eigen vectors (without

proof) - Cayley - Hamilton Theorem (excluding proof) - Reduction of a quadratic form
to canonical form by orthogonal transformation.

On completion of the course the students will be able to


CO1: Understand the standard theorems and applications of maxima and minima using principles of
differentiation.
CO2: Understand the techniques of partial differentiation and vector differentiation.

CO3: Understand the concept of double integration to compute the area enclosed by the plane curves.
Outcome
CO4: Understand the concept of triple integration to compute volume of solids and applications to Gauss
and Stokes’ theorem under vector calculus.
CO5: Calculate Eigen values and Eigen vectors for a matrix which are used to determine the natural
frequencies (or Eigen frequencies) of vibration and the shapes of these vibrational modes
