DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE GRADE 9

SOFIA ANNE N. ROGAN MR. SYROSE MORALES

BSEd- IV _Biological Science Cooperating Teacher

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to:
a. identify the correct writing and naming of binary ionic compound;
b. formulate chemical equation of binary compounds;
c. write chemical formulas and name binary ionic compound that consist of non metals
and metals. .

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Binary Ionic Compound (naming and writing formula of elements with Ions
of only one charge)
References: Ferriols-Pavico, J. et al. (2006). Exploring Life Through Science. Phoenix
Publishing house Inc. 2014 ( pages 203-205)

Materials: picture of salt

Values Integrated: Promote cooperation and exhibit careful judgment

III. LEARNING ACTIVITIES

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY LEARNERS’ ACTIVITY

A. PREPARATORY ACTIVITIES

1. Prayer

Class let us all stand for the prayer In the name of the Father, of the Son
and of the Holy Spirit…. … Amen.
2. Checking of Attendance

Class monitor kindly check the I already checked it ma’am

attendance and give it to me after class.
Very good!

3. Greetings

Good Morning students! Good morning, Ma’am!

How are you today class? We’re fine, ma’am!

Good to hear that! Are you ready to Yes, ma’am!

learn something new today?

Okay! I hope that after the discussion

you can gain new knowledge.
4. Motivation

For now we will have a short game

entitled “elementwos”. Inside this Yes Maam!
envelope there are scrambled letters
and all you need to do is to create some
word/s from it. Group yourselves into 5
members. Understand students?
Ok very good! So are you ready class! Yes ma’am we are all ready!
Ok! This game is intended for 3 mins.
only. 1, 2, 3,.. start!
( students are working)
( students posting their work on the board)

Words formed; naming, writing,

chemical equation, subscript, elements,
cations, anions, binary ionic compound.
Time is up! Let’s see your works.
(asking what are the meaning of some
word/s that they had) (student explain/ answer it)

Ok very good! All these jumbled letters

will be discuss later.

B. DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES

1. Presentation of the Lesson

Based on what we had done earlier, can

you guess what our lesson for today is?
Ma’am! (Student A raise her hand)
Yes student A? Naming elements ma’am?

Ok, student A! Another Idea?

Oh! Yes student B? Naming and formulate chemical

equation of binary ionic compounds
ma’am?
Very Good! Student B, so now we will
discuss how to write formula and name
binary ionic compound.
2. Discussion/Analysis

Why do we name things?

Yes student C? We name things in order to identify

things easily!
Very Good! Student C, in chemistry we
also need to name those chemicals to
distinguish whether it is harmful or not.
Right students? All: Yes ma’am

If we define Binary Ionic compound

what does it means?

Yes, student D? It is a combination of two elements.

Nice answer! Student D. specifically

what kind of elements?

Yes, student E! Metals (cations) that form positive ions

and nonmetals (anions) that forms
negative ions ma’am.
Very good! Student E.

To sum up the ideas of your classmates

what is the binary ionic compound?

Yes, student F?
Binary ionic Compound is a compound
composed of metal (cations) and
nonmetal (anions).
Exactly! Student F. How is binary
Ionic compound named? Specifically
those elements wit ions of only one
charge. Do you have any idea?

Yes, student G?

In writing chemical formula we need to

follow these rules:
1. Cation are always listed before the
anion.
2. Cation-anion ratio must give a net
charge of zero.
3. Ratio is always expressed in the
smallest whole number.
4. Unchanged English name of the
metal is used.
5. The name of the anion includes only
the English root plus-ide.

Yes, student G that is right!

So let us do it step by step. Example is

the sodium chloride. What is the
common name of sodium chloride?

Yes student H? Salt ma’am.

Very good! Student H, what is the

cation in this compound?

Yes, student I? The cation is the Sodium ma’am.

Exactly! Student I. It is because sodium

composed of positive ion.

Who can write the chemical formula of

sodium at the board? Yes, student J? ( writing the Na+ on the board)

Nice student J! Since the subscript of

sodium is 1, we do not use it because a
symbol by itself already represents one
atom.

How about the anion? The chloride ma’am

Yes student K?

Exactly student K! How about its

formula? ( writing the Cl- on the board)
Yes, student L?

Yes it is right student L! Na+ + Cl-

Since you know the chemical formula

of the two elements, we will add them,
who can try? Yes, student M?

Very Good student M! Then we will

use the easy method on how to
formulate the chemical equation of
NaCl.

Do you have any idea what method is

it? Yes, student N? I think it is Cross charge method
ma’am.
Nice! Student N. It is cross charge or
simply known as cross multiply.

Good! Student N. In cross multiply,

what do we do with the numbers of the
elements?

Yes, student O? We cross multiply the number and

write them as subscript, since both ions
have a numerical charge of 1, no
subscripts are written.

NaCl ma’am
Exactly! Student O. So, the formula of
sodium chloride is? Yes, student P?

Good student P! Why is it that the

name of NaCl is sodium chloride
instead of sodium chlorine?

Yes, student Q? It will become Sodium Chloride

because according to the rule, the name
of the anion includes only the English
root plus-ide.

None so far ma’am

Ok very good! Student Q. Do you any
questions or clarification?

C. Application
Since you have no questions or
clarification, let us try if you really
understand our topic, who can answer it
at the board?
Write the formula of the given
compounds. 1. K+ + Br- KBr
1. Potassium bromide (student A) 2. Zn2+ + O2- ZnO
2. zinc oxide (student W) 3. Na+ + S2- Na2S
3. sodium sulfide (student V) 4. Al3+ + N3- AlN
Write the formula of the following 5. Al3+ + S2- Al2S3
4. aluminum nitride (student X) and
5. aluminum chloride.(student Y)
D. Generalization
So. students what have you learned I learned to how to name and write
today? formulas of inorganic compounds.
Yes, student J?
I learned a lot in today’s discussion,
that binary ionic bonding contains two
Ok, Student J, what else? Yes, student elements, and it formed by metals or
H? the cations which are positively
charged and nonmetal or the anions
which are negatively charged. Since we
discussed the element with ions of only
one charge, it is referred ions which
consist of only one atom only.

I learned how to name and write

formula and follow the simple rules.
Through this, I can easily identify what
Nice student H! How about you student are metal and nonmetal, and the net
I, what have you learned? charge of the compound must have
zero.

Very good student I. Seems you really

understand our topic for today.

IV. Evaluation
Get ½ sheet of paper and answer the following:
Test I. Name the following binary compounds.
1. ZnO
2. KI
3. BaS
4. MgCl2
5. NaBr
Test II. Write the formula of the given compound (show your solution)
1. Sodium bromide
2. Strontium fluoride
3. Calcium sulfide
4. Sodium oxide
5. Magnesium nitride

V. Assignment
For your assignment please study the metals with ions of more than one charge on page
206 of your book. Ferriols-Pavico, J. et al. (2006). Exploring Life Through Science. Phoenix
Publishing house Inc. c. 2014.

Please answer the following:

1. Differentiate the stock system to classical system.
2. give 5 common cations with variable oxidation number.

VI. Closing Prayer

Let us stand for the closing prayer.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. ..Amen.
Good Bye class!
Good Bye, ma’am!
