Considering Figure 3.1, we can see that the forces that act on the masses are similar to those of the SDOF
system but for the fact that the springs, dashpots, masses, forces and deflections may all differ in properties.
Also, from the same figure, we can see the interaction forces between the masses will result from the
relative deflection between the masses; the change in distance between them.

RESPONSE SPECTRUM ANALYSIS
SHEAR BUILDING (ASSUMPTION)
A shear building is “defined as a structure in which there is no rotation of a horizontal section at
the level of the floors. In this respect, the deflected building will have many of the features of a
cantilever beam that is deflected by shear forces only, hence the name shear building” (Paz & Leigh,
2004).
According to Paz and Leigh (2004). There are three assumptions of a shear building:
1) The total mass is concentrated at the levels of the floors,
2) The slabs or girders on the floors are infinitely rigid as compared to the columns, and
3) The deformation of the structure is independent of the axial forces present in the columns.

RESPONSE SPECTRUM ANALYSIS REQUIREMENTS
The data gathering procedure utilized the MOMENT RESISTING FRAME shown Figure 3.1 (Model
Building) and the Response Spectrum Analysis is performed on the building using both IBC 2012 and NSCP
2010. The structural properties of the building shown in Figure 3.1 are as follows: all columns are 0.60m x
0.60m in cross-section, beams are 0.35m x 0.70m in longitudinal direction and 0.30m x 0.60m in transverse
direction, slab thickness is 175mm, wall thickness is 150mm. The building is to be located in Zamboanga
City, soil profile type is SD and seismic source type is A, type of frame is a special reinforced concrete moment

4) Response spectrum analysis on the building frame (Figure 3.1) using 1) and calculate the following responses:

The first step for the construction of response spectrum curve using NSCP 2010 is to obtain the
values of Seismic Coefficients, Ca from NSCP 2010, Table 208-7 and Cv from NSCP 2010, Table 208-8.
See Figure 208-3 from NSCP 2010, as the basis or guide to construct the RSA curve, with its following
properties, Ca and 2.5Ca under Spectral Acceleration (in g’s) being the Y-axis and Period ( T/Ts) in

Second is to determine the values for To , Ts , To /Ts as the Control Periods on the
x-axis and the values of the ratio of the fundamental periods T1 /Ts , T2 /Ts , T3 /Ts
as the basis in order to obtain the values of Sa,k (Spectral acceleration at mode

from Figure 208-3 of NSCP 2010. From the values of Sa, spectral displacement

The first step for the construction of response spectrum curve using IBC 2012 is to obtained the
data or values of the ground motion parameters, Ss (the mapped maximum considered earthquake
spectral response acceleration parameter at short period) and S1 (the mapped maximum considered
earthquake spectral response acceleration parameter at 1-sec period). To determine the values of the
design ground motion parameters, Ss and S1 through the United States Geological Survey or USGS
Figure 4.3 USGS online map showing spectral acceleration parameters Ss and S1
Second, determine the Site Coefficients, Fa , and Fv which can be obtain from Table
11.4-1 and Table 11.4-2 of ASCE (7-10) and SMS (spectral response acceleration for short periods)
and SM1 (spectral response acceleration parameter for 1-sec). The site coefficients Fa and Fv can be
determined from ASCE 7-10, Tables 11.4-1 and 11.4-2, respectively.
