Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title:
How to truly listen

Objectives:
Students will be able to dig deeper into music

Students will be able to create and diagnose music ideas as a group

State Standards:
AH.6 I can justify how structure, forms, and performance decisions inform responses to music based on
the elements of music.

AM.7 I can analyze and critique compositions and performances using personally developed criteria.

Context: Students will be learning what to listen for in music. This lesson requires just basic
music knowledge and this lesson will go into their private study and their future life with music
Data:
Students will be in groups by their instrument Brass, Woodwinds, Percussion. This is because every
section has a little bit different detail in what they need to learn.

Materials: Pencil, tablet/computer

Detailed paragraphs from here on down.

Procedures:
Introduction (5 minutes):

Students will enter the classroom and put their things along the side of the band room
and sit in concert seating for attendance. I will then explain what how to truly listen,
which will be written on the board, is and what every section is. I will then separate
them into their groups and begin.

Teacher Directed ( 15 minutes):

In this group I will discuss with the students listening to music. I will start the discussion by asking what
makes you want to listen to a performer? And what is the difference between player and a performer. I
will end this session by discussing what I think differences a performer and a player. We will then for the
rest of time go on our ear training apps as a whole and do some together.

Collaborative (15 minutes):

In this session there will be a score of music handed to my students and I will leave them to make up the
music with interpretations into the music. Looking at what they hear in the music. They will put the
finished work on the director’s podium.

Independent Digital (15 minutes):

In this section the students will grab a tablet/or computer and sit in a chair formed in a circle. They will
watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IU3V6zNER4g

linked on their Google Classroom and discuss one thing to take away from this video and write
in on the whiteboard.

Closure (40 minutes):

The students will sit down in their concert block I will then hand them the sheet music of the
score they marked up we will then preform each score and the band will then discuss what they liked in
each one and why. They would then perform the piece in the style that I want them to perform it in. We
will then all discuss what we liked in my version of the piece. After discussion I will then explain to them
why I made the choices I did in the music and what it does to the music itself. Around 5 min before bell
we will pack up.

Rationale:
I chose this piece of multimedia because I thought this app would be great for the students to use
their iPads. This app supports student learning, standards, and objectives because it is allowing
the students to apply what they are learning about listening. It is also a great way for the students
to really be engaged when truly listening since the app makes it so easy and fun to use. It is a
high-quality app because it is the perfect tool to use for students because it is very simple and
easy for the students to use. It is a great content quality app because it is free of error. This app
does align with the learning testing their listening capabilities. The app does give feedback. This
app allows the students to be able to achieve the goals that are given through the standards. This
would be useful for all student learners to use because they wouldn’t even need a pencil. They
can totally use their fingers. A student who is visually impaired might have trouble seeing the
screen, but a friend of I will help as he really just needs his ears.
This video does such a good job of explaining what listening truly is and how to activate our
ears. It also helps keep students engaged. It even gives an example to learn from. This video
supports learning goals, standards, and objectives because it will help the students get a better
idea of how they should be listening to everything they play. It is definitely a high-quality video
because it does such a great job of explaining the definitions and why listening is so important.
The content quality of this video is extremely good because it does such a great job of making it
easy for the students to understand. It aligns with the learning goal because it is helping students
learn how they truly listen. It also complies with the standards from this unit because it is helping
students learn how to analyze compositions and performers. This video choice is good for all
learners because all the students have to do is watch and listen. I would also be able to use the
closed captions for learners that are hearing impaired so that they could follow along by reading.
If a student was visually impaired, then they could just listen to the words.
