WEBSITE AND CLASSROOM BLOG CREATION TOOLS

Name: Amaris Davis

Directions: Using the template below, describe how students could use a blog, wiki, or other website-
creation tool to learn required learning standards in your content area: For an A grade provide an idea that
reaches a Level of Technology Implementation of 4 or above. Remember higher levels (4-6) require that
students assume adult/professional roles; engage in higher-order thinking; and use technology
create/publish original content for their classmates and/or others beyond their school/classroom. The
learning activities and products should be engaging and meaningful to the students and to others who will
view/use/benefit from students’ work. Review your handouts on Engaged Learning, Authenticity, and LoTi.

MGSE9-12.G.SRT.2 Given two figures, use the definition of similarity in terms of similarity
transformations to decide if they are similar; explain, using similarity transformations, the meaning of
similarity for triangles as the equality of all corresponding pairs of angles and the proportionality of all
corresponding pairs of sides.
Brief Description of Learning Experience: What learning standards will be addressed? What will
students and teachers do? What products will students create? How will the project be introduced? How
long will it take to complete? What audience will use/care about the product(s) students are creating? How
broad is this audience? (Overview should be a minimum of 2 paragraphs).

Students are studying similar triangles, characteristics, and identifying similar triangles. For this activity the
students will be creating a blog to either discuss similar triangles, their favorite part/characteristic of similar
triangles, how similar triangles differ from congruent triangles, or how similar triangles can be used in the
real world. Through this process, students will be developing their own understandings of similar triangles
and how it relates to them in order to further their learning of similar triangles. Some of their understanding
may be triggered through research or even their own personal thoughts.

Student: Individually, the student will create a blog on either medium of their choice (EduBlog, WordPress,
or TypePad), and the student will choose a prompt to focus their blog on with the standard of similar
triangles. In their blog, the student can discuss similar triangles, their favorite part/characteristic of similar
triangles, how similar triangles differ from congruent triangles, or how similar triangles can be used in the
real world. The student can be as creative as they desire to be in the aesthetics of the blog. Students are
welcomed to help classmates but are not allowed to do work for other students. This activity is individual.

Teacher: The teacher is expected to walk around the classroom to assist students as needed with their blog
and to make sure that students are on topic with their assignment. The teacher is also expected to make sure
that students are using the approved blogging sites.

Student Engagement/Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi): What LoTi would this lesson be and
Why?

WEBSITE AND CLASSROOM BLOG CREATION TOOLS
The LoTi level of this activity is LoTi-level 4a because the activity is student-led. The students have
individuality and free reign in this activity of making the connections on how similar triangles relates to
them. The students are also creating products using technology of their own choice. They aren’t
collaborating with others outside of the classroom, so the level is lower. However, they are being creative
and using technology the way that they see best fit for the activity.

Importance of technology: Why is using a website-creation tool critical to the project? Could the project
be completed without this technology? What would be lost without using it? What other types of
technology, if any, are going to be used in the learning experience?

The website-creation tool is critical to this project because the students are given a different medium to
share and express their learnings. They are able to be freely creative and their work will have meaning to
them and to others who come across it. It also builds their experience in using technology and blogs that
they could use in future professions or hobbies. The project does not have to be used with technology, but
the technology will give the students a sense of being a part of the current society when it comes to using
technology, rather than doing a paper project.
Inspiration (optional): If you used existing example as a model for your project (whether in part or
whole), include the URL(s) so we can visit. Explain what concepts you “borrowed” from others.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Briefly discuss some possible issues surrounding Internet safety and
student privacy that could arise while implementing this learning experience and explain how you would
(1) minimize risks to students/yourself; (2) alleviate any fears by parents/administrators, and (3) follow
common Internet Safety/Acceptable Use Policies.

The issue that could occur is the students using blogging websites that do not protect their privacy, so in the
lesson there are provided websites that they can use to ensure that this doesn’t happen.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. What are you trying that you have not tried
before? What do you hope to learn from this activity? How do you hope it will help students learn?

This is a new activity for me. From this activity, I hope to give my students an opportunity to explore
triangle similarity in a way that they will find meaning from it and be able to express that connect to the
world. I hope to learn how to better encourage my students from their expressions in their blog. I also hope
that this activity will not only help them to learn and discover more about triangle similarity but also help
them to learn how to think creatively, be creative, and develop skills in blogging that they could use in the
future.
