I. What Referral Is?
A. An act of referring someone for consultation, review, or further action.
B. A person whose case has been referred to a specialist or a professional body.

II. Why Is The A Need For Referral?


A. Specialization that will best serve the condition and well-being of a client.
B. Expertise and specialization of practitioner cannot address the client’s needs.
C. To avoid dual relationship.
D. To address Transference/ Counter-transference.
E. Proximity of the client from the practitioner.
F. To address an issue of trust.

III. When To Do A Referral?


A. Soonest possible time to address the pressing needs of the client.

IV. How Is A Referral Done?


A. In a formal and professional manner.
B. Informed consent.
C. Appropriately terminate the services.
D. Official letter of endorsement to the receiving practitioner.
E. Turnover of documents to the receiving practitioner.

V. Guidelines in Doing Referral (By: William Miller as cited by Jim Burns, “The Youth

A. What kinds or types of clients does the practitioner prefer to handle?
B. What training/s or credential/s does the practitioner have?
C. What therapy approach/es does the practitioner specializes in?
D. Are there evidence or proofs of success in the practitioner’s work?
E. How long has the practitioner been practicing?
F. How long does the therapy sessions usually take?
G. How much does the practitioner charge? Is it per session? One time payment?
Cash? Check? Etc.
H. What affiliations does the practitioner have?
I. What are the views of the practitioner? Religious, political, gender? Etc?
J. What kind of reputation does the practitioner have?
