MENTAL ILNESS

 Overview #TAKE 1
Mental illness, also called mental health disorders, refers to a wide range
of mental health conditions — disorders that affect your mood, thinking
and behavior. Examples of mental illness include depression, anxiety
disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders and addictive behaviors.

Many people have mental health concerns from time to time. But a mental
health concern becomes a mental illness when ongoing signs and
symptoms cause frequent stress and affect your ability to function.

A mental illness can make you miserable and can cause problems in your
daily life, such as at school or work or in relationships. In most cases,
symptoms can be managed with a combination of medications and
psychotherapy.

 Symptoms #TAKE 2

Signs and symptoms of mental illness can vary, depending on the

disorder, circumstances and other factors. Mental illness symptoms can
affect emotions, thoughts and behaviors.

Examples of signs and symptoms include:

1) Feeling sad or down

2) Confused thinking or reduced ability to concentrate
3) Excessive fears or worries, or extreme feelings of guilt
4) Extreme mood changes of highs and lows
5) Detachment from reality (delusions), paranoia or hallucinations
6) Trouble understanding and relating to situations and to people
7) Excessive anger, hostility or violence
8) Suicidal thinking
 What’s About In Indonesia? #TAKE 3

Indonesia is stepping up efforts to protect people with mental health

conditions by affording national agencies new powers to monitor and
close down institutions found to be abusing patients.

The country’s human rights commission and its witness and victim
protection unit are among the agencies empowered to monitor facilities to
check they don’t contravene a 1977 government ban on “pasung” –
shackling or detaining patients in confined spaces. Under the new
agreement, which was made public in early September, agencies will
have a mandate to visit places of detention, such as faith healing centres
and private and state social care and mental health institutions, on a
regular basis. They will have the authority to shut down or sanction
facilities that use shackling.

Kriti Sharma, an HRW researcher who has been studying shackling in

Indonesia for five years, welcomed the new agreement.

“Shackling people with mental health conditions is illegal in Indonesia and

yet it remains a widespread and brutal practice,” she said. “People spend
years locked up in chains, wooden stocks or goat sheds because families
don’t know what else to do.”

Sharma said the new agreement was important because “It provides for
regular and independent monitoring of government and private
institutions. If they find any abuse, the authorities should take action, and
ultimately they should support people with mental health conditions to live
independently in the community”.
 Mentall Ilness Can Cause A Suicide Case#TAKE 4

"Individuals with mental health disorders have a risk of mortality that is two
times higher than the general population," says Elizabeth Reisinger
Walker. "This translates to about 10 years of life lost for people with mental
disorders."

Recently, we can see thru’ social media that Idol of K-Pop that are Jong-
Hyun from Shinee and Sulli from F(x) are passed away cause of getting
hate comments from haters, besides that both of them are known to be a
person with mental health disorder which is depression.

Harsh schedules that involve long working hours, no privacy and

malicious comments from anonymous cyberbullies online take their toll on
stars.

In a social media post, Kim Dong-wan a member of first-generation K-pop

boy band Shinhwa, said that many K-pop idols’ fame and money came at
the expense of their mental health.

“Celebrities are working under extreme pressure and the level of stress
they face is increasing as competition becomes heavier. Young K-pop
idols particularly do not eat or sleep properly because of their tight
schedules, yet they are asked to hide their emotions and smile and show
positive attitudes for their fans in public. They have to be sexy but must
not have sex, and be tough but must not fight for anything,” Kim wrote.
