A comprehensive study on Snake Drill Technique:
Method for improving of oil extraction percentage

As it is surprising that up to 2/3rd of the oil can still be left in the ground even
after an oil field reaches at the end of its production life. This oil is too difficult to
extract because it is located in various small pockets that cannot be accessed
under normal operating conditions. The International Energy Agency says that
the world's economies would be benefited from an extra 300 billion bbl if access
were made possible. The Snake Drill Technique helps us to extract oil from the
previous inaccessible places. In contrast to conventional drills, snake well drills
help to intricate horizontal paths, cutting through shale and sand to reach
numerous diverse reservoir pockets from a single drilling platform. The well uses
a combination of technologies including directional drilling, extended reach
drilling, swell up wellbore packers and remotely operated zonal isolation and
control.
The directional drilling techniques allow the path of the well to be directed to
achieve contact with as many potential producing features as possible. This result
in Snake like (S shape) well path which weaves up and down throws multiple
geological features in order to achieve maximum reservoir drainage. The pressure
breakdown is minimal and the recovery efficiency from these wells is proving to
be significantly better than that of vertical wells. These wells are called ‘Snake
Wells’ because they can be drilled horizontally and 'snake' from one pocket of oil
to another. Without the snake well, several individual wells would have to be
drilled in order to access each pocket. The snake well significantly lowers the cost
of drilling. So snake wells have significant importance in the access of the small oil
pockets and also this technique optimizes the cost of drilling.
