Why are e-cigarettes(vapes) are starting to look more

dangerous than cigarettes? And what is the history of both?

The number of people who smoke or vape is huge and it keeps getting bigger.

People changed from smoking regular cigarettes to e-cigarettes because the

companies kept saying it is healthier, is it though?

Cigarettes were invented in the 1800s and it blew up around the start of the

1900s. A lot of studies been made on this invention; one discovery, which was around

1950s, showed the link between and lung cancer, and this was the lead for finding

new alternative for cigarettes. This was main reason for this huge change, but

another is the price of the cigarettes compared to e-cigarettes. Vape machines are

much less expensive than a pack of cigarettes when you do it on a future basis. Also,

the smell played a big role too. The first vape ever was created in 1967, but this thing

was not popular at that time.

Each year, the e-cigarettes industry started getting bigger and bigger and it

blew up around the 2010s. A lot of people started smoking again just because of the

e-cigarettes price’s changes, they are a lot cheaper than normal cigarettes. this made

the number of the people smoking high. Companies bragged about how e-cigarettes
or vapes are much safer than cigarettes, some studies agreed with and some did not.

The industry was all okay until July 2019, when the first ever patient had a lung

disease because of vaping and died. Then more deaths happened because of

vaping. It was then found that the reason for these deaths were caused by flavored-

liquid that are used in different vaping machines. Everything changed, the US federal

court gave companies a deadline for vaping companies to submit their liquids for

testing. The review for the liquids is not finished yet, it will probably be finished in

2021.But that does not mean states did not take an action in this. Michigan state was

the first to ban flavored-liquids, now more states are in the procedure of banning them

too. Also, states are starting to raise the age for buying any tobacco products, making

it 21 instead of 18.

In The vapes of wrath: why the FDA should ban fruity and sweet flavored e-

liquids to preclude adolescent use of e-cigarettes, Matti rose Vagnoni describes

how these flavors, advertisements, or posts that attract kids to start smoking. He

writes “Mentioning these flavors to a teenager might activate a sweet tooth and

induce cravings for dessert… While the evidence about the long-term use of e-

liquids is uncertain, the long-term risks associated with nicotine addiction are

clear and undisputed” (Vagnoni).
