Dear Lane,
You are not dropping anything! We are slowing down our initial pace to make time for clear instructions around routines,
and some teambuilding in our new configuration of classes. We are not starting ideas for stories until the first week of
October :).
Your Writing Mentors sheet should work great! as a springboard. Suellyn says I can't just have kids share directly with
people outside of PPS, however, I can have kids put an excerpt of their writing into one document that I can sort by your
students.

I hope that our shifting timeline isn't too frustrating for you. I know that you know all about how teaching is responsive and
fluid as the kids needs arise, but still, I hope we're not creating difficulties for your end.

I'm also adding my student intern, Kaleigh Warner, who's in the last stretch of her teaching program with UMF!

Next week Maya and I will send our timeline to you. Thanks so much!!

Dear Lane,

This all sounds phenomenal!

* We are definitely having students brainstorm, test out, and draft stories first, followed by selecting the best shoe story
to tell and storyboarding it. We will give them support and guidelines for that. You have shared a lot of great resources.
We will assess students' writing process in storyboarding, building on a theme or life lesson, and organizing their stories
with a plot structure.

* I LOVE the idea of having UNE students give feedback. We will need to inform parents and ask their permission. I will
check with Suellyn for any concerns. Google Link attached to some draft language

* Maya and I have planning in the afternoons and it would be very helpful for me to learn about your experience with the
technology side. I often rely on kids just knowing what to do or remembering what they did in technology class which
leaves some at a loss. More than happy to come by and chat with you- I teach in Biddeford until 2 each day so the
earliest I could meet would be 2:45- but I am open all day most Fridays.

* We will definitely do a showcase and would love to have your students attend. I agree it would be super cool for kids
to meet them face-to-face after the virtual connection. We may need the iPads, although if it's a showcase event with
purposeful use of phones I can get permission for that as well. No hurry on this- just let me know-

Questions for you:

1. Could you draft a letter that we could send to parents, or at least a paragraph that describes your course and how
you envision the purpose your students interacting with our students? I can add that to a letter explaining our side of
things. I will only have them let us know if they don't want their child to participate. Attached

2. I agree that Google Docs would be a good way to pair kids with university readers. I have a couple of ideas for the
logistics of this (our students put an excerpt of their story in a Google Sheet, you share the sheet with your students,
your students assess that excerpt in the sheet and give feedback OR you send us your students' emails, we have our
students share their doc with a UNE student who can comment. Numbers wise, Maya and I have around 170 students
between the two of us. I also have a UMF intern this semester who will have a cohort of about 20 of mine, so she could
do their feedback and we could just divide the 150 among your students. Can you let us know if these numbers are
realistic or if you'd just like a smaller cohort of our students? I have 13 students- perhaps each of them could take 10-12
students- might be easier to assign student with a UNE writing mentor (I added that to the Google Doc with my students
and emails)

3. Do you have a rubric or checklist that you've used in the past? I saw the rubistar link, and readwritethink has one as
well, and of course we'll customize to fit our standards. Would this be for the actual writing? Maybe a peer editing
feedback form?

I am so energized by this project and if it ends up to be a good fit, would love for it to be a core practice for 7th grade
ELA!!

Hello!
I hope that you have had a good week getting ready! I know students start on Tuesday which I am sure
has come quickly! We started classes this week and this morning has been the first time I have taken a
breath! But it is nice to have the three day weekend for a little slowdown before things get crazy (in a
good way of course!).

So I have done a little thinking about your project and here are some thoughts:
· Have students draft and write their stories first

· I have a class of students learning to be 6-12 teachers they would be more than happy to give
feedback on these stories as the students write them (might be an interesting audience for them to get
critiques (friendly of course) of their work). If students do this on Google Doc that could be easy or if not
I am sure we can find another way- might be cool to give some “peer” feedback from a college student
· Then have the students storyboard and learn about digital story telling- if time permits having them
evaluate samples of digital stories before they do theirs is always beneficial
· If you have Macbooks you probably have iMovie- that is a great tool. I would be more than happy to
come and show the kids how to do this – or can show you guys if you need a little refresher (I live right
across from Lincoln so that should be easy but I do teach M-H from 12-3).
· Once they have completed their digital stories there are a couple of ways you can share these with
a wider audience
o A show case using the photos of the shoes and QR codes is cool (I would say that)-
you can easily make QR codes- and then hang these in a place and let the
kids/parents/community members come and interact with the stories- cell phones are an
easy way to watch these- although not sure of your cell phone policy (although most
teachers/teachers would have access to these)- you are more than welcome to borrow
our set of IPad if you have a day that you do this (I perhaps could get my students to
come which might be neat if they have seen these stories as the students have written
them)
o You could also use a Voice Thread to share these stories with a larger audience

Just some thoughts and by now you may be taking this a totally different direction and if so feel free to
ignore these ideas.

Either way I hope you had a good week and enjoy your weekend!!

Yes, it's all coming very quickly. I am intentionally taking moments to stop and slow myself down.

We have MacBook laptops. I'm not sure when they will be issued to students but they will do some drafting and
storyboarding in their paper notebooks first. We currently have them revisiting your mentors and starting the process
the week of 9/16, but that might get pushed back as we become more realistic about what we can and will
accomplish in the first couple of weeks.

Good luck with your piles, starting up, and transitioning in general. Maya and I have teacher days all next week, and
fortunately get to spend the first one on Cow Island with Rippleffect!

If it's useful for your students to come help us when transitioning the stories from written to digital, the more hands
on deck to do that, the better. I'm feeling a little disconnect between our having laptops and having seen your
gallery being more interactive with iPads...and would love to collaborate with ways to help kids transition their
stories into digital form. Also, some logistical, workflow kind of ideas, such as efficient ways to get stories to
YouTube to QR to printouts of shoe photos--

Your slideshow about Digital Storytelling and the peer evaluation checklist are awesome!

As Maya and I get more into the nitty gritty of the daily work of getting kids up and into 7th grade, we will have a
better idea of the timing of when kids will be doing this work. I am so grateful for your project and for the
resources.

Ideas for “Shoe Stories”

Thank you for reaching out to me- I am so excited to share literacy ideas and love to hear what teachers and
students are doing! Here are some of my first thoughts- would love to talk more or do more brainstorming- this
is always fun!

Here are some ideas that pop in my mind:

· Sharing shoe stories- having an authentic audience is important to the writing process and also
motivating for the writer. I know that the students who wrote their stories in my project where all really excited
about creating the digital story and then sharing them on a Youtube channel. You can create a Youtube channel
pretty easily (all you need is a gmail account) and then have the students take their stories and create digital
movies to share. They can share these with other kids- their parents and community or even other students—
You can adjust privacy settings pretty easily--. Also once we shared them on Youtube you can easily make a
QR code and link that to the story. You can do an interactive showcase (like we did) or hang them around the
school- (pretty much any cell phone can scan a QR code)

· Creating Digital stories – having your students take their narratives and create digital stories using iMovie
(mac) or We Video (PC) is a great way to build in digital literacy with the written narratives. I have included
some information. I am attaching some resources to this email regarding digital storytelling (I have more in my
office if you are interested I can scan documents and get them to you)

· Mulit-modal- speaking of digital stories- I am also a fan of combining words with other types of texts
(photos, images, art) especially with middle schoolers who are experimenting ways to express themselves- (this
is a new book about food- but the photos are really cool! https://www.mothermag.com/what-kids-eat-around-
the-world/
https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0?ik=e1422c1001&view=pt&search=all&permthid=thread-f%3A1644965926225544009&simpl=msg-f%3A1644965926225544009… 5/10
12/8/2019 University of Maine System Mail - Re: Lincoln MS "Walk In My Shoes"
· Finding an audience to share – If you are interested in sharing these with a global audience let me know
as I have some connections  another audience could be my university students- that might be a neat way to
connect my future teachers with your students.

Here are some web resources that might fit what you are trying to do:

· My website has some resources- although I am not sure they will fit what you want to do- but might give
you some ideas- if you go to https://www.globalinmyshoes.com/ and then on the first page scroll down to where
you see” curriculum” and click on that it will take you to some lesson plans with “live links” some of these might
be helpful

· Here are some other websites that I found that might align with what you are doing:

o http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/spend-shoes-exploring-
role-265.html

o https://betterlesson.com/lesson/544244/shoe-narrative-writing-assignment

o https://www.writeabout.com/2015/10/your-shoes-must-have-a-story-tell-it-26/

I am more than happy to help in any way- if you want to get more digital and need help with creating digital
stories I am more than happy to come into your classes and teach the kids (and you!) or walk you through this
as well. Also I am teaching an adolescent literacy class this term- I could have my students help out- they can
be an authentic audience, they can help work with students on their stories, they can write their own and share
they as well- whatever you think might make sense-

Let me know how I can be of assistance- love the work you are doing--

Dear Dr. Clark,

My teaching partner, Josh Jones, and I are planning to do a version of Walk A Day In My Shoes for a
community building & personal narrative storytelling mini-unit at the start of school next year (mid-September
to mid-October...ish)

Along with conveying important aspects of their lives and identities, we're also having them choose a pair of
shoes that has a personal narrative connection. Part of their narrative will be one specific story of an
important or interesting day that they experienced in those shoes. (ex: the shoes I wore to my sister's
wedding, my winning baseball season, my first trip on a plane, best day with a friend, etc.)

Going deeper with 7th graders, we hope to teach them about using the shoes as a symbol of something
intangible (character trait, emotion, life's dream, possibly?)

You'd mentioned that you have some resources for planning and drafting stories. We are very interested in
them. Also, if you want to be involved in any way, or if their stories can enhance your project in any way,
please let us know.

We'll focus on these Long Term Learning Targets:

CCELA Writing 7.3 A

● Engage and orient the reader by establishing a context and point of view and introducing a narrator and/or
characters.

● Organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally and logically.

CCELA Writing 7.3 B

● Use narrative techniques, such as symbolism, dialogue, pacing, and description, to develop experiences,
events, and/or characters.

Thank you for bringing the Walk a Day in My Shoes project to Lincoln, and for the inspiration for this unit!

Sincerely,

Antona Briley, M.Ed.

Lincoln's Walk In Our Shoes update! We have gone through the writing process of fast-drafting a series of small
anecdotes. This week we will choose a personal narrative to draft, revise and publish!
This week: Drafting and looking at 7th-8th narrative mentors
Next week: Revising based on checklist/minilessons, possibly start digital stories
Since we are so fluid with our timing I think we will just plan to invite you when we do a showcase of the stories :)
Thanks a million for the inspiration, and for all the offerings of support. I was initially worried about the technological
aspects but I think the kids have got it covered--they can teach each other, and us a thing or two in that area.

We are drafting anecdotes that we will organize ito full narratives. We are assessing writing process right now as kids
build ideas. Later next week will be organizing and drafting, followed by a few writing revision days. That puts us around
the first-ish week of November for digitizing!

I think we have sorted out how to do that on our end...kids can record their voices in Garage Band and have that be a
soundtrack in iMovie to a series of photos or other images they choose.

Not sure if the virtual feedback will work since kids can't share stories outside of our PPS system, but when we get
closer to the digitizing I'll check back in. We're on our way!!
