One nation, one language is an ideology wherein the nation adopts a single
language as its of cial language. India is a culturally and linguistically diverse
country that has 22 languages of cially recognized in the eighth schedule.
Linguistic diversity is what makes India unique and 'Unity in diversity' is the
motto of our nation. But has linguistic diversity helped in uniting our nation?
How much a person will connect himself to the nation when the Prime Minister
of the country delivers his speech in Hindi and he is unable to understand it?
Linguistic diversity of the country results in many problems, such as many
North Indian graduates getting jobs in South India fell alienated and vice versa,
IAS and IPS of cers posted in area where they do not understand the local
language and cannot freely interact with people leading to poor administration,
when students go in different local language speaking school because their
family shifts there, leads to a lot of frustration and may have bad effects on
students. We often glorify that our country has so many different languages,
but how can it be glory when a person who speaks a particular language cannot
explain himself to another person. Having a common language for the entire
country will ultimately lead to the free ow of ideas which will connect people
making stronger bonds between different parts of the country. However this
does not mean that the government can impose language onto people, our
constitution itself gives us the freedom to choose our language, so what could
be done is that the government should try and make people understand the
bene ts of linguistic unity. At last, it could be said that from the present
scenario rather than "unity in diversity" we are more inclined towards "
diversity in unity".
