TREATMENTS IN AYURVEDA

Oral medicine
Snehanam:
Preaparing the body for subsequent treatments.It is done by administration of medicated
ghee and oil. During the treatment, medicated fat materials are taken internally and
externally in a systematic way.
Abhyanga snehanam:
Massage using medicated oil for: loss of skin luster,sleepiness,vatha predominant diseases
and fatigue
Snehapanam:
. Medicate oil or ghee taken orally
.duration-:8-12 days for osteo-anthritis skin diseases,chronic constipation
Thalam: retaining medicines over the center of the head using the help of a tailor-made cap.
. lt is considered to be a shorter and easier version of Shirolepa and in the ancient days it
was a treatment prescribed for mental illness.
. Used for ent,insomnia,migrane
. duration 20-45 minutes.
Sirovasti:
-Keeping oil over head
facial paralysis, migraine, head ache, insomnia, memory loss, mental stress, dry nose,
dryness of the eye and also for cervical spondylosis.
Sirodhara:
-Pouring oil over head
-Duration 40 mts/day for 7-21 days
-Regular shirodhara enhances blood circulation to the brain, improves memory, nourishes
hair and scalp, assists in
-providing sound sleep and calms the body and mind. .Shirodhara is one of the most
effective treatments for reducing stress and nervous tension.
Akshitarpana:
-Keeping oil over the eyes
-improves the eyesight, heals stiffness, pain and roughness around the eyes.
-helpful for serious eye disorders, such as glaucoma, ulcerated cornea
Swedanam-
second stage of poorvakarma.sweating treatment involves various process
Pinda swedanam:
.Pinda swedana is a process by which the who body (or any specific part) is made to
perspire
.Kizhi is prepared by using njavara rice,lemon
. Duration-45-60 mts/day for 14 days
-For Paralysis, Poliomyelitis, Pain, Osteo arthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis
Pizhichil:
. continues pouring of warm customized herbal mix of oil all over the body, accompanied by
: soothing, therapeutic synchronized Spa massage.
. Benefits:
. Tones and rejuvenates the skin, promotes relaxation,
. Tones up muscle and the entire nervous system
increase vitality and body immunity. A soothing and relaxing procedure -Duration-45-60
mts/day for 7-12 days
Tapa swedam:
Material like sand, cloth etc. are made suffiently warm and applied over the body
Avagaha swedam:
. immersion bath where patient is made to swect sitting in a tub of warm medical
decoction.
. for diseases such as neurological disorders, rheumatism and arthritis.
Upanaha swedam:
-application of hot paste of medicines on the painful part of the body. This medicated paste
is applied on the part and then covered with c piece of medicated cloth
Kudi swedam:
Circular kudi of low height is constructed without ventilation
Patients has to lie inside the kudi for sweating
Asamaha swedanam:
Stone slab heated using fuel and patients is made to lie over that.
Nadi swedana:
Medicine is boiled and steamed is led through a pipe and directed at part of the body.
Vashpa swedanam:
Leaves of medicinal plants are boiled and resulting steam is passed to the whole body
eliminate impurities from body, reducing fat.
Udvardhanam:
. Powder massage
. Duration-30-40 mts/day for 14-28 hrs
PRADHANA KARMA
At this stage the actual treatment procedure of purification take place
Vamanam:
-Expulsion of poison through oral route
The omit has to be collected for investigation After the emesis the patient is asked to smoke
a medicinal cigar
Virechanam:
-Expulsion of waste from whole body through anus
. The patient is given purgative and then rest in bed until the bowel movement starts
. The procedure may be repeated a few times -aims at cleansing the sweat glands, small
intestine, colon, kidneys, stomach, liver and spleen
Nasyam:
. cleaning the head region.
The nasal administration of medication.
Medicine heating facility and droppers are the requirements
Vasti:(medication through rectum)
. Two type-nirooha vasti and anuvasana vasti
. introduction of herbal oils and potions into the colon through the rectum
. In simple terms, means Vashti medicated enema
. provides high immunity and longevity, reduce the degeneration of the tissues and
prevents aging
. It takes just 5 minutes for this, but the patient has to maintain at least another 20 to 30
minutes before ejecting out
Rakta mosham:
. Process of bloodletting through leaching, siraveedam (cutting vain), or prakhalam (cutting
of tissues)
. Can be done in operation theatre
TREATMENT FOR BODY CARE IN AYURVEDA
Rejuvenation Therapy (14 Days): rasayana chikatsa
includes body massage with hand and foot by two therapists with medicated oil and cream
internal rejuvenated medicines and medicated steam bath.
. duration-90 mts-2 hr/day for7 to 14 days.
. This therapy is to rejuvenate mind, body and soul, for tone up skin, to strengthen all
systems so as to achieve ideal health and longevity.
Body Purification Therapy (15 Days) : shodana chikatsa
. It is a process of purifying the wholebody to atain proper balance of vatha, pitha and
kapha based on the panchakarma and swedakarma treatment.
Tharpanam (01 Time):
This is the cleaning process of the eyes which gives cooling effect., prevents eye diseases
and strengthens the optic nerve.
Mukhlepam (01 Time):
This is a herbal face pack with specially made herbal powder and fresh cream. This
prevents and avoids wrinkles and improves the skin tone. This is also good for the eyes.
General Massage: (Body massage for 60 minutes with herbal oil or herbal powder by hand
to tone up the body and to improve the blood circulation etc
Medicated Steam Bath:
Certain precious herbal leaves and herbs are boiled, and the steam is passed to the whole
body for 10 —20 minutes.
This is good for certain skin diseases, to eliminate impurities from the body, to improve the
tone of the body, to reduce fat etc.
Medicine preparation
Process include cleaning the herbal parts, drying them in the sunlight and processing - alll
these steps are very important in making the medicine effective as a remedy.
Types of medicines:
.Grithas are Cow’s ghee based preparation containing decoctions of medicines and other
liquid preparations like Mamsa Rasa
-Churnam or powder
-Gulika or tablet
. Enna or oil
.Lehya or decoction
Other forms are arishta, bhasma, kshara, kashaya lepa, anjana, panaka, sindhura and thaila.
