Howl Hero Choices
Maria M – HWC on Mondays, can only stay ½ hour. ACOG after - -Mr.Santoro, can you please check in
with her first so she can get the full value of her time – Mr. Martinez – please draft her for SS. She
needs help understanding concepts and what she’s supposed to do.
Sammy M – Family struggling with the various places she has to look to get her homework
information. 504 plan has assignment notebook--Yellow Homework Folder--going back and
forth with details for family. Is this happening? Really needs a one-stop-shopping homework
experience. Too much conflict around what family thinks is an assignment and what she
thinks is an assignment. She also needs more time on math assignments and quizzes. (side
note: I looked at the Herald and homework blog myself, and it is a lot of clicking around - is there a
way that only one designated place can contain all assignments? I know the google classrooms have
your individual ones, but I can see how navigating it can be confusing/overwhelming.)

-Team observations-
The team has noticed a recent improvement in the quality of work resulting from an increased
focus on the work. In addition, people have noticed an increase in her self-advocacy when she
needs help or clarification. Furthermore there seems to be an increase in the social network
she has created. We continue to keep an eye on her as the year progresses for any drastic
changes.

Reading Focus Discussed a plan for regrouping kids for Reading Focus Throughout the year
ELA Updates we will form different groups for Reading Focus time for different purposes, such as to support
Phones in ELA class only for a specific purpose and challenge you, or to simply give you time and space to read. The first rotation will start on
Tuesday, 11/12, (end at Winter Break?)

assignments for holly and santoro. Each week students can do Reading Plus. Every
other week they’re doing readers’ notebook entry.

- Discussed some student leaders who need more challenge and some strugglers

When Santino C returns from break he’s continuing to be unfocused and engage with peers.
Interventions we have done:
● Delaying breaks until evidence of work completed
● Reminders when he returns that he should return ready to work
● Check in reflection of how he used his break-he agrees that he uses it to talk to friends
and socialize
● We suggest specifically timed breaks so he has one morning break and one afternoon
break. Leaving every single class is not working. This year he has further to walk to
Student Services, his travel pattern is not direct, he is missing 15-20 minutes of class
each day.

Agenda: Conferences! Other house can’t attend a grade level mtg today (they are all at a 504) need to
make decisions and then pass it on.
Focus for 7th grade- last year’s focus was academic progress. Team discusses
purpose, focus, etc. of conferences for this fall. Some disagreement about what we think we
are supposed to do! Goal setting? We looked back at the guidelines from last year which gave
us guidance, that were linked in Weekly Update Create a slideshow template? Can’t meet as a
grade level… Andy shared a slideshow template with the other house, waiting for feedback
before adding it to school notes. Hope to start slide show on Monday, Nov. 4th and use the
Lions Pride AND Reading Focus time to finish the slide show.
Goal setting- HOWLs look at indicators, highlight one or two… use to write goals.

Update 504/IEP progress reports
Students:
Mom reports that Paige F is having some friend drama--affecting academics and socially and
causing a rough start to 7th grade. We suspect it is Kayla P.
Kayla has also been heard and observed being really negative toward Bilal. She rolls her eyes,
says “oh shut up” when he speaks out in class. She seems to be provoking to see him react in
Science (along with Angie, Kayla, Deshawn in Social Studies) sometimes resulting in Bilal
crying.
Sam M.- Aunt emailed us about the many ways we have to communicate homework, they want
us to make Sam use her planner… Antona discussed with Aunt.
Santino C’s breaks are important but a couple of teachers are pulling him aside to have him
stop peeking into doors.

Breaks: We have been giving kids 5 minute breaks before LP/Reading Focus and SLT. We are
not making this a big announcement, so kids don’t stand or wander out or feel entitled to do so,
but we are all easing into those class times.

Reading Focus
Discussed parameters, what students should be doing. They should be working on RP or
Independent Reading.
Emma and Antona are reshuffling groups. Ordering a book of short stories that are 7th grade
level, Flying Lessons & Other Stories--goal is to support students who struggle with independent
reading and reader’s notebook entries.
Martinez is planning a multi-perspective current events group, looking at how many news stories
are covered differently by different news outlets.
