Age. The risk of high blood pressure increases as you age. Through early
middle age, or about age 45, high blood pressure is more common in men.
Being overweight or obese. The more you weigh the more blood you
need to supply oxygen and nutrients to your tissues. As the volume of
blood circulated through your blood vessels increases, so does the
pressure on your artery walls.
Not being physically active. People who are inactive tend to have higher
heart rates. The higher your heart rate, the harder your heart must work
with each contraction and the stronger the force on your arteries. Lack of
physical activity also increases the risk of being overweight.
Too much salt (sodium) in your diet. Too much sodium in your diet can
cause your body to retain fluid, which increases blood pressure.
Drinking too much alcohol. Over time, heavy drinking can damage your
heart. More common in Men
Healthy Diet
Weight reduction should be suggested if necessary, to maintain an ideal body
mass index (BMI) of 18.5-24.9 kg/m.
Low dietary salt. Guidelines recommend that we should have no more than
5-6 grams of salt per day.
Encouraging exercise
Make physical activities part of everyday life (eg, walk or cycle to work, use
the stairs instead of the lift, walk at lunchtime) and build in enjoyable
activities to leisure time every week (eg, walking, cycling, gardening,
swimming, aerobics, etc).
lantaw ug Tv ug magsige ug higda.)
Medical Treatment
Consider treating immediately if BP in clinic is ≥180/110 mm Hg.
Antihypertensive treatment should be commenced in people aged under 80
years with stage 1 hypertension plus signs of end-organ damage (known
cardiovascular or renal disease), or with diabetes mellitus or a 10-year
cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk ≥20%.
