★ Why do folk and popular culture face sustainability challenges?
○ Folk culture
■ Maintaining their unique local landscapes in an age of globali ation
■ //Note: Assimilation and acculturation causing the depletion of traditional
values of folk culture groups
Ex. The amish in the USA: Because of growing metropolitan areas
in Pennsylvania(used to be one of the largest concentrations of the
Amish), a vast majority of the Amish have migrated to Kentucky.
A tradition of the Amish is to given sons land once they become an
adult. The growing prices of fertile land in Pennsylvania is causing
the to move to Kentucky.
Prices nearly ⅕ of prices in Pennsylvania

Ex. Folk culture meets popular culture^^ Amish boy uses a computer

Ex. Dowries in India: rapid changes in long-established cultural

values can lead to instability and violence. In India, women s roles
in the society have shifted. From housework to working and
contributing to the society. However, the also lead to many
NEGATIVE IMPACTS such as, doweries. [Traditionally a small
gift from the groom to the bride s family, as a sign of respect. In
the twentieth century, the custom reversed, and the family of a
bride was expected to provide a substantial dowry to the husband s
family] In 1961, the government enacted anti-dowry laws, but the
ban has been widely ignored. These doweries have become larger
and an important source of income for the groom s family.
Doweries can come in many forms. If a family is unable to provide
a dowry, the bride can be thrown out, of both the husband and her
own family. This has led to 8,000 related deaths since 2000 and
100,000 cases of cruelty/torture.
★ Sustainability challenges for popular culture
○ The sustainability of practices designed to promote uniform landscapes
○ Landscape Pollution and Scare Natural Resources
■ What is a uniform landscape? The modification of an environment to
promote product recognition and greater consumption

2

■ Landscape Pollution: when an environment is modified to promote the

sale of a product (see Uniform Landscape )
Ex. diffusion of fast-food restaurants (ie McDonalds) McDonalds
can be found all around the world. In some cases, to build a
McDonalds, hills may be flattened and valleys may be filled in.
■ Depletion of Natural resources: Increased demand for products of popular
culture can strain the capacity of the environment.
Ex. Golf courses consume large quantities of land. In Scotland,
courses are designed with the environment, and do NOT CREATE
A LARGE STRAIN ON THE ENVIRONMENT. Likewise, in
other places, courses are designed to partially align with the
environment. (ie. native vegetation and natural landscape) On the
other hand, a vast majority of golf courses by completely
destroying the natural environment and reconstructing an
environment that depletes the natural resources.

CHECK-IN

★ Folk culture faces loss of traditional values in the face of rapid diffusion of popular
culture
★ Popular culture can cause two environmental concerns: pollution of the landscape and
depletion of scarce resources.
