Alchemy and
Astrology: Letter
Magick in the Quran
THE USE OF MAGICK VERSUS
MAGIC IS TO DIFFERENTIATE
BETWEEN TRICKS
PERFORMED BY ILLUSIONISTS
(MAGIC) AND USING
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL
ENERGIES TO PRODUCE AN
OUTCOME (MAGICK). AN
EXAMPLE OF MAGIC IS
PULLING A RABBIT OUT OF A
H AT, WH E R E A S PR AYE R I S A
FORM OF MAGICK.

Approximately two months ago, we

touched on the power of words and
the weight of their vibrational
energy. We understand the
scientific foundation from
psychoacoustics that sound is a
viable medium used to heal. The
brain cells vibrate and send
electromagnetic waves. With each
wave, the cells in our body vibrate to
match the frequency. Different
frequencies target the various
densities in the body. Sound can
heal behavioral problems, reduce
stress, level out the nervous system,
and synchronize cerebrally to put
you in alignment for manifestation.
Therefore, we can conclude that
healing through sound (whether
chanting, singing, or talking) has
profound metaphysical as well
as physical benefits.

“It is for those who believe a

guide and a healing” – Quran,
41:44

Each verse (ayah) in the Quran

contains a certain amount of
healing property. To magnify the
transmission to the cellular level, you
can use a transporter. The best
transporters are water, honey, and
olive oil. God said, “There comes
forth from their [bees’] bellies, a
drink of varying color wherein is
healing” – Quran, 16:68-69. If we
affect them by the sound of the
Quran, the level of energy inside
them will increase in vibration. As I
mentioned in a previous post, water
has a high storage of sound and the
chemical compound of water can
change with a simple recitation of a
positive affirmation.

“And We send down of the Quran

that which is a healing and a
mercy to those who believe …” –
Quran, 17:82

Our beloved Prophet practiced this

form of divination by reciting
“Bismillah Ar-ahman Ar-aheem” (In
the name of God, the Beneficent,
the Merciful) over a glass of water
before drinking. It is often
prescribed by scholars and spiritual
leaders to recite Surah Al-Fatiha as a
form of supplication on a cup of
water before consuming, in order to
ward off the affects of sihr (black
magic) or hasad (evil eye).

Now that we’ve touched on the

restorative properties of sound, let’s
look deeper at the significance of
the alphabet. Ibn Arabi, also known
as the father of Islamic Magick,
taught us how words and symbols
unlock aspects of the Universe. The
magickcal hidden properties of the
Quran continue to amaze me.
Language is used to open up
realities in the same manner that
mathematical numbers open up
their own individual reality. Arabi
dedicated his studies to unlocking
God’s word and his captivation is
shown through his writings that are
saturated with terminology from the
Quran. The scripture is thus
understood as undefined from God,
yet it becomes manifest in recitation
and writing. God’s speech reveals
itself not only in scripture, but also in
the Universe.

Alif Lam Meem

“That is the Book, wherein is no

doubt, a guidance to the
Godfearing who believe in the
Unseen, and perform the prayer,
and expend of that We have
provided them…” – Quran, 2:1-3

Each letter in the Quran is a world

on its own with its own spiritual
power and attribute. The ancient
occultists, from Ibn Arabi to modern
day spiritualists, would spend years
of their lives deciphering and
exploring the mysteries of each
letter and its place in the cosmic
order. According to Arabi, every
letter specifically evolves from an
element (water, fire, air or earth),
subsequently belonging to either
lightness or darkness and to a
corresponding numeric code. This
form of science is too vast to briefly
cover in this post, so I’ll expand on it
in the near future.

But without digging too deep, let’s

begin to decipher alif lam
meem, because immediately after
these three letters are mentioned in
the Quran, the verses that follow
speak about the miraculous essence
of the Book:

“Alif Laam Meem. This is the Book;

in it is guidance sure, without
doubt, to those who fear God” –
Quran, 2:1-2.

The first letter of the Arabic

alphabet is alif which can be
considered a in the English
language. When written in Arabic,
this letter resembles the number
one. It symbolizes the Oneness of
God and speaks to the infinite
Divine reality which is beyond any
other realities. It describes a
modality of the Divine Presence
wherein there is nothing, no
creature or knowledge, nothing but
God. Adam, also known as the father
of humanity, represents this
character. Additionally, Alif is the
representative of “I AM”.

Some scholars hold the belief that

Alif Lam Meem represents: God
(Alif), Gabriel (Lam), and
Muhammad (SAW) (meem). This,
however, is a belief and not a
proven fact.

Secondly, we have laam which is

equivalent to the English l. Laam is
the twenty-third letter of the Arabic
alphabet. It symbolizes perfect
understanding which is quite
interesting when you consider that
the night of power (Layatul Al-Qadr)
begins with laam.

Meem or m in English is the twenty-

fourth letter and symbolizes
duality. Meem begins and ends with
the exact same sound to show us
that the One from which we
originate is the One to whom we
shall return. All things begin and
end in the same place.

The alchemy of Islamic inscription

on jewelry and talisman is another
branch from the tree of power of the
Arabic language. The use of metal —
gold, silver, copper — with
inscriptions of Quranic verses and
prayers was manifested out of the
need to demonstrate the
metaphysical property each phrase
contains. Since everything carries
energy, the use of Islamic
calligraphy on metal was intended
to amplify the esoteric significance
of each verse.

Fun fact: Prophet Muhammad

(SAW) practiced a form of letter
magick with the following
inscription on his sword:

FORGIVE HIM WHO WRONGS

YOU;
JOIN HIM WHO CUTS YOU
OFF;
DO GOOD TO HIM WHO DOES
EVIL TO YOU;
AND SPEAK THE TRUTH
EVEN IF IT BE AGAINST
YOURSELF.

The real message of the relationship

existing between letters and
numbers is difficult to fully
understand, but I hope that this
brief introduction opens a new door
of curiosity to you about this
beautiful faith. This type of
knowledge can be understood
and fully integrated through a
mystical evolution. This is achieved
by mindfulness and visualizations. I
am a proponent for daily meditation
and I like to focus my visualizations
on one of the 99 names of Allah.

May y’all be blessed! If you have any

questions, please do not hesitate to
ask.
