TLP – Academic Recess Brain Breaks
PBS Kids

BASIC INFORMATION
Summary Students will take a brain break on PBS Kids in order to relax,
recharge, and get ready to bounce back for their next
assignment. Once completed, they will take out their response
journal and record their level of readiness for their next
assignment.
Grade Level 1​st​-6th
Time Frame 1-20 minutes
Subject(s) There are games that help build teamworking skills, games about
feelings, shapes, social studies, healthy habits as well as your
usual English, Math, Science, and even Spanish games.
Topic(s) Taking a brain break on PBS Kids via a computer, laptop or
tablet that is academically based but still fun relief time for the
student.
Instructional Materials ● Each student would need access to a computer, laptop
or tablet.
● Response journal
● pen/pencil
STANDARDS AND OBJECTIVES
CA Content Standard(s) This website’s wide variety of games can cover a variety of
standards in Math, English, Science, Social Studies, etc.

Lesson Objective(s) - Students will take an academically based, but still fun, brain
break to give them a chance to relax and refocus for the next
task/assignment they will be asked to complete.
PLANNING CONSIDERATIONS
UDL PBS Kids has a very wide variety of game selection for grades
K-6+ respectively so it is totally possible to stay within an
appropriate level of difficulty while still appealing to a wide
range of age groups. There is such an array of subject matter that
a relevant topic can always be found and tied into the standards
being covered in your regular lessons.
ASSESSMENT
Assessment of Learning Based on the type of game, they receive a score of how many
correct/how many totals, or a record time they may have
completed that particular game/activity in.
LEARNING EXPERIENCES
Sequence of Activities ● Students retrieve a computer/device to access the
internet.
● Students log into Academic Recess and follow our link to
pbskids.org
● If students are free to choose whichever subject they
would like within their grade level they may do so. If as
the teacher you would prefer a certain subject, instruct
them to choose within that section of games.
● Students complete their puzzle/game
● After completion of their brain break, students will take
out their response journal
● Record progress/minutes/results
● Respond in the journal with readiness to focus on next
assignment
CLOSURE Students will complete their Journal response and rate their
level of readiness for the next assignment/lesson.
